Reviews - What do customers think about TNIV Study Bible/Personal Size-Turq/Choc DuoT?
An excellent addition to a Christian library Aug 5, 2009
There are a few things I had to "get over" to appreciate the TNIV Study Bible. On a more serious level, I had to get over my aversion to the gender inclusive language. After some serious study about translation methods, I have come to the conclusion that the TNIV is just as accurate in its method of translation, but its approach is just different. The main ideas and meaning are the same. Paul in his epistles was speaking to all believers, and this translation just acknowledges this. While my preference for the translation of the Greek "adelphoi" is the traditional "brothers," I now accept the translation into "brothers and sisters" as equally valid and accurate to Paul's meaning.
The other thing I had to get over was the binding. While this may seem trivial, it was still a hurdle for me. I am used to black and occasionally tan or burgundy calfskin or goatskin covers. Of course, the state of so-called leather and bonded leather covers today is abysmal, so I opted for the outrageous turquoise/chocolate Italian duo-tone. Nothing natural looking about this binding! Now that I got it, I really like it, however. Why not a splash of bright color for the Book of books? However, I am hoping that Zondervan will have a Renaissance Leather edition of this Bible available soon. (A lovely red calfskin would be perfect.)
Inside the notes are excellent and a pleasure to read. I find the more I read the TNIV the more I like it. The Study Bible is top notch, with all the elements I consider necessary: numerous study notes, a thorough concordance, a subject index, beautiful maps, a map index, and of course, cross references. This is a great study Bible both for the new Christian and the older Christian who wants a change of pace.
