More About Zondervan Publishing
Zondervan is an American international Christian media and publishing company located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Zondervan is a founding member of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA).
Zondervan was founded in 1931 in Grandville, MI, a suburb of Grand Rapids, by brothers Peter ("P.J.", "Pat") and Bernard (Bernie) Zondervan, who were the nephews of publisher William B. Eerdmans. The company began in the Zondervans' farmhouse and originally dealt with selling remainders and publishing public domain works. The first book it published was Women of the Old Testament by Abraham Kuyper, in 1933.
Within a few years Zondervan developed titles of its own, and began publishing Bible editions. The Berkeley Version appeared in 1959, and the Amplified Bible in 1965. The NIV New Testament was published in partnership with the International Bible Society in 1973, and the complete NIV Bible appeared in 1978.
The company was bought by HarperCollins, a division of News Corp, in 1988, and is the company's principal Christian book publishing division.
Zondervan also publishes many other books by Christian authors focusing on topics of interest to Christians. In the 1970s it published The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey, which has sold more than 30 million copies. They are also known for the Bible storytelling books of Ethel Barrett, Joni by quadriplegic Joni Eareckson Tada, Baptist minister and author Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life, which has sold more than 35 million copies, Sacred Marriage, the modern marriage classic by Gary Thomas (author), and Rob Bell, author of Velvet Elvis and presenter of NOOMA. NOOMA is a series of short spiritual films. In 2004, Zondervan expanded to include Renee Altson, Shane Claiborne, Sarah Raymond Cunningham and Margaret Feinberg, authors writing for young readers.
Reviews - What do customers think about NIV Complete Bible (64 CD)?
Other than my Bibles, this was the best purchase I have ever made. Mar 30, 2007
The audio bible is great. I can listen while I'm driving, while I'm cooking, it's so hard to find the time to sit down and read. And the person reading has a very pleasent voice, not irritable and at the begining of each book there's a brief commentary about the book. I believe it will strengthen my faith by leaps and bounds. After all "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." As Easter comes this year, think about all Jesus did for us: He died a sinners death to pay for your sins and mine and He rose again on the third day so we could live a new life, free from guilt and begin a relationship with Him. So anyone who is thinking about ordering this audio bible,If you haven't already given your life to Jesus, now would be a good time to repent and make Jesus the Lord of your life and let His Holy Word begin to change your life like never before. Ask Jesus into your heart, He is waiting just for you. mamag59
NIV Audio Bible Voice Only CD Mar 26, 2007
Easy listening. The guy has a good voice so if you want to listen to the Bible on CD I would recommend this one.
Great tool Mar 20, 2007
I've never compared the voice only version with the dramatized equivalent, but I highly reccomend this product! Unabridged and read by a pleasent, steady voice, it is helpful in keeping one focused while reading along or great for long car rides, etc.
Decent product, but could be better. Mar 2, 2007
Although the narrator speaks clearly on the CD and is easy to understand, he has a sing-song voice which tends to put you to sleep. The audio mix leaves much to be desired; I have to turn the base all the way down and the midrange and treble all the way up on my car radio in order for the voice to sound somewhat natural. I have listened to many books on CD from Recorded Books, who employ professional actors/actresses as narrators, and that is the standard to which I am comparing this product. Zondervan could have put a little more money and effort into this product. After all the scriptures do say: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." (Colossians 3:23,24)
Treasure for the blind Feb 17, 2007
This Audio Bible is a steal at fifty dollars, conatining 60 CDs well and conveniently packed in a sturdy case of good quality.
The reader's voice is pleasant and calm, without dramatization or personal hysterics.
As for content, I have only read 4 CDs as yet. The Bible begins with wild mythic fantasies, but quickly settles down to some superb narrative and very realistic character drawing. One can't avoid thinking that Jacob and his family, Joseph and his brothers erc. are drawn from life. As with any ancient text which still lives in our culture, this has much we must learn and much we must leave behind.
