Item description for NASB/Message Parallel Bible-HC by Zondervan Publishing...
Overview The New American Standard Bible version is available in a parallel edition, paired with today's most popular paraphrase, "The Message."
Publishers Description The Message Designed to read like a letter from God, The Message presents Scripture the way it originally appeared, as a naturally flowing narrative. Using only the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts, The Message s creator, Eugene Peterson, began by setting the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs in contemporary English, free of distracting verse numbers and stiff, formal language. The result has been a warm, highly readable paraphrase that reveals the richly personal nature of God s Word. The Old Testament followed, and the complete Message Bible was released in 2002. Used in both public preaching and private devotions, The Message has captured the hearts of millions of readers, enriching their understanding of Scripture and deepening their faith. The New American Standard Bible In the mid-20th century, The Lockman Foundation saw the need for a new translation based upon the values that inspired the revered American Standard Version (ASV). Employing the same exacting word-for-word approach as the ASV, a world-class team of conservative translators and scholars drew on the strengths of its predecessor and on new Hebrew and Greek textual sources to produce an all-new translation. The New American Standard Bible (NASB) was released in its entirety in 1971, and was updated in 1995 to render it more understandable to modern-English readers. It is recognized as today s most accurate word-for-word translation. The most literal translation and bestselling paraphrase together in one volume *The NASB and The Message side by side *Instant comparison deepens your grasp of Scripture *Double-column format If your translation of choice is the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and if you appreciate The Message for the freshness and clarity it brings to your reading of the Bible then you ll love The Message/NASB Parallel Bible. Emphasizing a narrative reading of the Bible, The Message is treasured by countless Christians for the way its contemporary language illuminates ageless truths. *The trustworthy, literal interpretation of the Updated NASB, today s foremost word-for-word modern translation. The NASB is used by millions of people, from scholars to pastors to everyday Bible readers who appreciate a more literal translation of God s Word. *Double-column format. *Ribbon marker (leather edition only)."

Zondervan was founded in 1931 in Grandville, MI, a suburb of Grand Rapids, by brothers Peter ("P.J.", "Pat") and Bernard (Bernie) Zondervan, who were the nephews of publisher William B. Eerdmans. The company began in the Zondervans' farmhouse and originally dealt with selling remainders and publishing public domain works. The first book it published was Women of the Old Testament by Abraham Kuyper, in 1933.

The NIV New Testament was published in partnership with the International Bible Society in 1973, and the complete NIV Bible appeared in 1978.
The company was bought by HarperCollins, a division of News Corp, in 1988, and is the company's principal Christian book publishing division.
Zondervan also publishes many other books by Christian authors focusing on topics of interest to Christians. Reviews - What do customers think about NASB/Message Parallel Bible-HC?
Great Bible Jan 9, 2007
This Bible brings one the most literally-word-for-word translated version and the most liberally spirit-of-the-text modern reading. A wonderful, wonderful reading Bible.
NASB is the Yin to The Message's Yang. Jul 30, 2006
-2 Star for no Chapter/Verse. (Wait for a chapter/verse version)
If your curious to about how TMSG(The Message) stacks up against a serious interpretation, the NASB is the most literal English translation from the Greek commercially available (unless you can get your hands on the out of print ASV). TMSG is a great resource when trying to convey a modern day translation from an ancient text to a young mind. If you've passed the 6th grade I believe you have knowledge to skip The Message and move up to an NIV/KJV parallel bible. The Message can be a bit wordy in places and you'll find yourself saying "I get the message, I get the message" while the author continues to pond The same message even further. Thus the title of my review, NASB is the Yin to The Message's Yang.
It's Such a Blessing!!! Jul 16, 2006
I recommend anyone that's a Christian, no matter if you are new or seasoned, to purchase this Bible! Not to say that any other Bible you choose isn't good, because all Bibles reveals God's message to us, but I found this one to be so helpful in my understanding of God's Word. The Message is a really good tool to summarize or help explain any verse that may be confusing. I read this Bible along with my NKJV Bible (the Extreme Word Bible just in case you wanted to know) everyday, and I enjoy every minute of it!! If you do purchase this Bible, I hope that it is a blessing to you as it is to me.
Many Blessings to you and yours and Have a Wonderful Day! :-)
WONDERFUL!!! I just wish the Message incorporated verse numbers Nov 22, 2005
It took me several years to get drawn to the Message style (the book of Romans is particularly a MUST read in this heart-opening translation!), and I am much too "into" precision to read the Message without a literal translation by its side (I would consider the Message a paraphrase--highly useful but not appropriate as a stand-alone for serious study). So it was definitely God's perfect timing that I found myself looking for a copy of the Message Bible just when this parallel was available for pre-order. In recent years, I'd come to use the NASB as my "base" translation, typically finding it more accurate than others when I investigate the Hebrew or Greek (though with some verses I'm more impressed by the NKJV, which I would also gladly commend as a readable and beautiful "base" version for those who are "into" words). So I eagerly anticipated receiving the Message with my base translation side by side. And I have not been let down save one quibble: Namely, it would be enormously helpful for me if the Message text was also numbered. Even with the passages side by side, it often takes a long while to figure out what portion of the Message corresponds to which verse in the NASB. (Although the translator intended the Message not to be broken up by the verse numbers you find in most translations, there ARE numbered versions of the Message now available, but they are not parallels). Generally the Message is wordier, causing the corresponding NASB to fall on quite a different part of the page, and in those books of the Bible in which the authors hearken back to the same ideas a lot, figuring out just what corresponds to the NASB verse can slow me down enormously.
