This book describes how Ernesto "Che" Guevara's tactics were applied and failed in Guatemala. A number of reasons for this include: (1) the military of Guatemala became aware that if they surrendered as in Cuba they would be executed, thus these government forces fought ruthlessly and to the death; (2) Guevarian thought, accepted as dogma by the guerrillas, despised and ignored the need for supporting militia (e.g. escopeteros); (3) the preparation of guerrillas was often faulty e.g. indigenous languages chosen were often incorrect for the area of action; (4) guerrilla leadership was often culturally "White" ("Ladino") or at least not indigenous to the area of action, and sometimes even European Spanish; (5) the religious influence in Guatemalan culture clashed with marxist theory; (6) weapons and tactics of the guerrilla's opponents was enhanced by the Vietnam experience (and Israeli and US supply); (7) and above all the guerrillas Guevarian ideology of hate, insistance on rigid ideological "purity" and a propensity executions (sometimes of respected local "caciques") followed by retreat left the civilians vulnerable to reprisals and thus violated the Latin American tradition of nobility in war. Although one must note that Simon Bolivar had done the same in his retreat from Valencia, Venezuela, during the Latin American Wars of Independence. The book is marred by literal acceptance of Rigoberta Menchú Tum's writings which at the time this volume was written were not so commonly known to have been "enhanced." However, this is book is an extremely valuable resource in the understanding of these wars in "Mayan Lands."
