Overview Offering a strong antidote for spiritual perfectionism, Yaconelli dares to suggest that "unfinishedness" accompanies true Christianity. Escape the "ought to" tyranny and discover the God who meets and transforms believers in the midst of life's messiness.
Publishers Description I Guess I m Not a Very Good Christian . . . Do you feel like: I don t pray enough I don t read my Bible enough I don t share my faith enough I don t love God enough I m not committed enough I m not spiritual enough Then this book is for you. Messy Spirituality was written for the silent majority of us who have been convinced that we just don t do Christianity right. We spend most of our lives worried about what we don t do instead of what we have done, focused on our imperfections instead of God s fondness for the imperfect. Why? Because we ve been bombarded with books, tapes, talks, seminars, and movies convincing us that real Christianity is all about perfection. Michael Yaconelli dares to suggest that imperfection, infiniteness, and messiness are, in fact, the earmarks of true Christianity; that real Christianity is messy, erratic, lopsided . . . and gloriously liberating. What if genuine faith begins with admitting we will never have our act completely together? Maybe messy disciples are exactly the kind of imperfect people Jesus came to earth for and whose company he actually enjoyed--and still enjoys. If you want to find Jesus today, look for him in the midst of burned-out believers, moral misfits, religious incompetents . . . men and women whose lives are, well, messy. Messy Spirituality is a strong antidote for the spiritual perfectionism in us all. Here are truths that can cut you loose from the tyranny of ought-to s and open your eyes to the deep spirituality of being loved, shortcomings and all, by the God who meets you and transforms you in the midst of a messy and unpredictable life."

Messy Spirituality Mar 13, 2007
This is an excellent book. I have appreciated it greatly and as a youth pastor have been very pleased with the impact it has had on the group of students that are studying it together. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling to live out an authentic spirituality and faith in the real world.
Refreshing Feb 28, 2007
The fruit of the Spirit is NOT competence, NOR perfection. Writing with a candor rare in Evangelical spirituality, Mike Yaconelli refreshes our memory. We are not our achievements.
"Messy Spirituality" reminds me of Brennan Manning's "Ragamuffin Gospel." Both books startle us back to reality. Both force us to ponder whether or not we truly believe in grace.
If we scrupulously pursue personal perfection, and feel secretly ashamed when we always fail to hit our target, then what ever happened to grace-based acceptance.
If you're up for honesty, try Yaconelli.

God's Annoying Love For Imperfect People
"Is there a spirituality for the rest of us who are not secluded in a monastery, who don't have it all together and probably never will?" p. 12
I kept saying "Yeah! Yeah!" whilst reading this book. Get it!
Messy Spirituality Nov 3, 2006
Just what I needed to hear. This book was referred to me by a pastor friend because I kept spouting off my "spiritual rebellion" against the status quo. If is encouraging to read a prominent voice in our culture having had the same inner struggles with how we do things in the church. As much as we want to make everything "fit"...it just isn't that easy nor was it ever supposed to be.
Must Read for Everyone Who Calls Him/Herself Christian Oct 23, 2006
I can't say enough good things about this book. In my opinion, if you don't "get it" (the real meaning of walking with and for Christ) after reading this book, you probably never will. Not only is the message 100% right on the mark, but the writing style is very inviting and compelling. I read it a second time immediately after reading it through the first time - I was just too disappointed it ended. Buy this book, it can revolutionize your life!
