Item description for Introduction to Bioengineering (Advanced Series in Biomechanics, Vol 2) by Y. C. Fung...

Bioengineering is attracting many high quality students. This invaluable book has been written for beginning students of bioengineering, and is aimed at instilling a sense of engineering in them.

Engineering is invention and designing things that do not exist in nature for the benefit of humanity. Invention can be taught by making inventive thinking a conscious part of our daily life. This is the approach taken by the authors of this book. Each author discusses an ongoing project, and gives a sample of a professional publication. Students are asked to work through a sequence of assignments and write a report. Almost everybody soon realizes that more scientific knowledge is needed, and a strong motivation for the study of science is generated. The teaching of inventive thinking is a new trend in engineering education. Bioengineering is a good field with which to begin this revolution in engineering education, because it is a youthful, developing interdisciplinary field.

Reviews - What do customers think about Introduction to Bioengineering (Advanced Series in Biomechanics, Vol 2)?

As an introduction it is a failure  Mar 24, 2003
The title is misleading since the book is an uninspired collection of articles. The concept used for in the arrangement
of the various chapters is poor. This is a cheap way to get published. This review is not intended as a general overview over
the quality of the specific articles concerned which are, as they stand, in general interesting or even good. It is only that the editor has done a bad job in his choice and (noncoherent) compilation of material.
Complete, yet ovewhelming  Aug 24, 2002
As the title of the book indicates, introduction to bioengineering gives an overview of the issues that bioengineers deal with such as tissue engineering, artificial bllod, biomechanics, etc. Nevertheless, the information is overwhelming, since basically the intro to bioengineering is a compilation of bioengineers journals.
Certainly, the book gives you a pretty overview of what bioengineers do. However, it is also certain that you will struggle to understand the book if you are not familiar with biochemistry.
