Reviews - What do customers think about Jazz for Young People Curriculum with Book(s) and Video and CD (Audio)?
Good stuff but not without problems May 5, 2008
I use this curriculum with my 8th Chorus/Music class. I think that the magazines are great, but I haven't ever found a place to purchase just the magazines so I don't let my kids use them because after one year they would be ruined.
Also the entire curriculum is on CD, and what Wynton says and has the band play is excellent, but it is very difficult to keep a class attentive to a CD of this nature. Each lesson is close to an hour long! The video tape is good, but it is the same music that is on the CD's.
I do use this curriculum but I add recordings and DVD's of the actual composers playing the music and I have to explain that the band on the video is just a cover band. Also, I listen to Wynton and then do most of my own teaching. That seems to work better for me.
A Great Teaching Resource for grade 6 - 9 students Jan 15, 2007
This is truly one of the best kits available to teach jazz to young students. It offers an interactive approach, and creator Wynton Marsalis speaks to the students in a language that they can understand. If you are looking to expose your students to a different style of music....other than the music of Beethoven, Mozart etc. then this is the program for you. The student workbooks are set up in a magazine type format and the video segements just enhance the CD's. A great resource for upper elementary music teachers.
