Item description for Jan Steen 1632-1679 (Rijksmuseum Dossiers) by Wouter Kloek...
Jan Steen is an entertaining painter of the 17th century. He loved everyday life, the fun of the tavern, weddings and parties: he loved the celebrations on St. Nicholas's Day and Twelfth Night. And he painted them all with a comic twist. But the elusive Jan Steen was not just a jokesmith, he was a man who knew about art and drama, who was well versed in classical mythology and the Bible. And he was an outstanding painter, with an individual technique and fascinating working methods. All these aspects are explored and explained in this Dossier. The collection of paintings by Jan Steen in the Rijksmuseum has prompted this examination of his rich and extensive oeuvre against the background of Steen's life, his self-image and his reputation.

Great & affordable introduction to Jan Steen Feb 6, 2008
Jan Steen is a wonderfully fun artist from the "Golden Age" of the Netherlands. This book was written by a former curator of the Rijksmuseum (in Amsterdam) where several Steen paintings are displayed. I learned alot from this book and enjoy Steen's work even more now.

JS-17th Century Apr 4, 2007
Well explained on the day to day lifestyles of the 17th century. This book comes across well in showing us, the reader how they lived! The colorfull pages are breath taking. Even showing us how the artist used the same picture but changed many subject matters. Very interesting...
