Reviews - What do customers think about Sacred Songs of Christmas: A Family Treasury [With CD]?
A wonderful collection of songs and readings for families to use during Advent and Christmas Nov 29, 2009
This book contains the sheet music and lyrics for 19 Advent and Christmas songs. All of the songs focus on the birth of Jesus. No "Frosty the Snowman" or "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" in this collection. It also includes the stories behind the writing of many of the songs, the Biblical Christmas account from Luke 2, poems, partial verses from Christmas hymns beyond the 19 included, family Christmas activities, recipes, etc. It also includes a CD with a children's choir singing each of the 19 songs. The CD by itself is enjoyable enough that it has been promoted from "the CD that goes with the book" to one of the Christmas CDs that is regularly played at our house.
This is a wonderful resources for families looking to prepare for and celebrate Christ's birth. The readings, stories, poems, etc. are broken up into small sections making it approachable for children and helpful for family devotional time. We have been using the songs, Bible readings, and stories as a part of our family's Advent devotional time this year.
Some of the songs in this collection may not be familiar to some American Christians. Several of the songs originated as German Christmas songs and so may be more familiar to people raised in a Lutheran church or in an area with a strong German immigrant influence. Those German songs have been translated to English in this book. I did not know all of the songs when I bought the book, but I have come to enjoy them all very much!
The songs include: The Angel Gabriel Angels We Have Heard On High Welcome to Earth, O Noble Guest O Little Town of Bethlehem Oh Come Little Children Oh Come All Ye Faithful He Whom Shepherds Once Came Praising Away In a Manger In a Little Stable Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Now Sing We, Now Rejoice Silent Night Once in Royal David's City Little Children, Can You Tell? Joy to the World As With Gladness Men of Old What Child is This? Songs of Thoughtfulness and Praise
