More About Jude Winkler
Even a brief glance at the biography of St. Francis of Assisi reveals to us that he was a man of the people. Not only did Francis found a religious community – the friars minor – but he also walked from town to town on the Italian peninsula and spoke with locals about how much God loves us and that we need to spend our lives turning towards Him. He preached powerfully and countless people listened to his message.
The face-to-face contact in preaching and spiritual guidance is today in the 21st century still an important part of what it means to be a Franciscan. And our friars do go out to communities to speak to the faithful about our Catholic religion. Friar Jude Winkler, before he became an Assistant General, spent a lot of time travelling and preaching. Here is a short video of him addressing the question of whether God is fair.
Other friars are also involved in providing faith guidance to communities across the United States and beyond. Just last year, Friar Vincent Gluc, the vocation director for St. Anthony of Padua Province, led a retreat at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, New York. Friar Paul Lininger, the pastor of St. Bonaventure Parish in Toronto, Ontario, flew to California a few months ago where he addressed a religious community of women. Friar David Suckling who is also from Toronto has been speaking to students at St. Bonaventure School about faith for more than a decade. He is a much beloved by students who seeing Friar David in the distance will run up to him and let him know what is going on in their lives.
As Catholics we are all called to evangelization. The Conventual Franciscan Friars always remember this call. We too must make sure not to forget it. Sometimes a few words about the richness of our faith can turn around another person’s life.
