Item description for A Tale Out of Luck: A Novel by Willie Nelson & Mike Blakely...
Overview Retired Texas Ranger Captain Hank Tomlinson intends to spend the rest of his days raising cattle on his Broken Arrow Ranch, and nurturing his frontier town of Luck, Texas. But when the brutal murder and scalping of a mysterious drifter leads to a clash between cavalry soldiers and a band of Comanche Indians suspected of the killing, a full-scale Indian uprising seems likely. Worse yet, the murder of the drifter bears a disturbing resemblance to a string of killings Hank remembers from his distant and violent past as a Texas Ranger. Meanwhile, Hank's twenty-year-old son, Jay Blue, and his adoptive brother, Skeeter, find themselves on the trail of a valuable Kentucky mare who vanished under their watch. The trail leads them into the dangerous haunts of outlaws and vengeful Comanche warriors. Now Hank must attempt to keep his sons safe while trying to catch a murderer who he knows will soon strike again. His ace-in-the-hole is beautiful Flora Barlow, the tavern owner with a knack for detective work. Though rival lawman, Matt Kenyon, and competing rancher, Jack Brennan, complicate Hank's investigation, he and Flora slowly begin to uncover a crooked web of crime, deception, and murder. Dark secrets emerge, and everyone must choose sides as lawmen, outlaws, soldiers, and Indian warriors converge for a final, bloody confrontation.

Must read this action-filled western! Aug 15, 2009
Legendary Singer/Songwriter Willie Nelson and co-writer Mike Blakely have brilliantly created a captivating tale of adventure and murder set in the old west frontier town of Luck, Texas. It tells the story of what happens to retired Texas Ranger/Rancher Hank Tomlinson when the dark secrets of his past catch up with him. The tale begins with the gruesome discovery of a brutally murdered body, and the terrifying realization that the slaying resembles a series of killings from Hank's past. He and his sons solemnly vow to catch the killer and solve the mystery. Their quest leads them into dangerous confrontations with the Comanche Indians, an avengeful son and a wicked rival rancher. Mr. Nelson and Mr. Blakely are masterful storytellers, having created a suspenseful, engrossing storyline that enthralled me from start to finish. They did a magnificent job crafting a fascinating cast of unique characters. The added touch of Native American lore embellished the story nicely. I absolutely loved this intriguing, old-fashioned western and hated to see it end. I highly recommend this extremely entertaining book!!

I bought this book for my mother to read. She really likes Willy Nelson and has read his autobiography. My mom read the book in two days and had a hard time putting it down. It was filled with adventure and well written. Highly recommend this book.
MAMAS DON'T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE COWBOYS...LET'EM BE MYSTERY WRITERS AND SUCH! (PART ONE) Apr 27, 2009
So there I am downtown at my favourite bookseller, speaking to my confidential informant...'cause I'm always on the lookout for a good lead on a good read, when ************** (I gotta protect my sources), gives me the lowdown on this mystery/western written by none other than Willie Nelson, and Mike Blakely. It's the story of retired Texas Ranger Captain Hank Tomlinson, who wants to spend the rest of his days as a rancher just outside of Luck, Texas. Well any investigator worth his salt knows what happens when a Western lawman seeks a peacefull retirement...all Hell breaks loose! Once again I'm not going to reveal plot or character development, 'cause you know I don't ever want to spoil a great read, but I will tell you when you finish this unconventional western, you'll be hoping for a sequel real soon. My advice to you now Hoss, is to get on your Mustang...or whatever other method of transportation you got...and go see your favourite bookseller...and rope a copy for yourself...tell'em Johnny, Willie and Mike sent you!
