Reviews - What do customers think about Preaching James (Preaching Classic Texts)?

Good for Preaching and Preachers!  Aug 15, 2008
Churches love to hear good preaching from the epistle of James. It is so relevant, practical, and filled with timely wisdom. Preaching James,
written by William Baker and Tom Ellsworth, is designed to give the busy preacher all the necessary materials needed to preach a series of exciting sermons from this neglected New Testament epistle. Like the Interpreter's Bible, this book deals with each chapter of James in two sections: the commentary written by Baker and the sermons written by Ellsworth.

I liked the sermons much better than the commentary portions. The sermons are rich with relevant applications, lively illustrations, and outlines that really preach. They are well worth the price of the book. The commentary sections, however, seem flat, explaining the obvious without much solid content, and fail to give the reader the material needed to work up a good series of sermons/lessons on James. I was amazed that the commentary section does not attempt to solve the problem of reconciling Paul and James concerning faith and works.

The book does help the preacher. Ellsworth gives grateful tribute to his professors at St. Louis Christian College where he received his theological training. All I can say is whoever taught him the epistle of James really must have been a great teacher! We need more like him.
