Reviews - What do customers think about William of Malmesbury's Chronicle of the Kings of England: From the Earliest Period to the Reign of King Stephen?
Somewhat disappointed Nov 29, 2005
For the price I paid, I was expecting a much better edited version, something that had a longer, more detailed introduction with notes on the original manuscript, references, editorial or translation choices/preferences, and the like. I was also expecting a larger list of works cited by the editor/translator, but was sorely disappointed. The text itself leaves a lot to be desired; I have seen other editions of Malmesbury's work that provided a better text. The print was uneven and ridiculously small, and there were pages where I could barely see the letters because the type was so faint. The only reason why I am giving this edition 3-stars is because Malmesbury's text is still delightful and is important enough to be read by those interested in history. I would suggest not buying this version, however.
