Item description for William Wilberforce [With CD] (Pure Gold Classics #29) by William Wilberforce...

Overview
The 29th Pure Gold Classic, William Wilberforce presents the very best of this great man?s life and work. It includes his Practical View of Christianity,
historic papers, and a wonderful biography of the man who became the conscience of the world and helped bring an end to the practice of slavery in the civilized world.

William Wilberforce, the son of a wealthy merchant, was born in Hull in 1759.William?s father died when he was young, and for a time William was brought up by an uncle and aunt. William came under the influence of his aunt, who was a strong supporter of John Wesley and the Methodist movement. Disturbed by these developments, Mrs. Wilberforce brought her son back to the family home.
In 1784 Wilberforce converted to Evangelical Christianity. He joined the Clapham Set, a group of evangelical members of the Anglican Church, centered around John Venn, rector of Clapham Church in London. As a result of this conversion, Wilberforce became interested in social reform and was eventually approached by Lady Middleton and was asked to use his power as an MP to bring an end to the slave trade.

As a member of the evangelical movement, Wilberforce was sympathetic to Mrs. Middleton?s request. In his letter of reply, Wilberforce wrote: ?I feel the great importance of the subject and I think myself unequal to the task allotted to me.? Despite these doubts, Wilberforce agreed to Mrs. Middleton?s request, but soon afterwards, he became very ill and it was not until 12th May, 1789, that he made his first speech against the slave trade.

Reviews - What do customers think about William Wilberforce?

William Wilberforce  Apr 30, 2009
On reading this compilation of history, theology, part-biography etc.
I must say that the group who put this work together should be
commended. The first chapter tells the story of a legend, who although physically weak, the LORD GOD put into his heart a compassion to fight
for what is eternally right in this mist of life that we have, to defend and help those who are poor, weak, and in need, to exhort and correct those who falsely bear the name Christian, but most importantly, to glorify and honor the Bright and Morning Star, Christ Jesus, the Son of the One True living GOD.

I must say, I truly did enjoy the biography inserted into this work.
William Wilberforce seemed like a very likable creature of God. He was very talented in many aspects of life and the life he lived showed that he used his God given abilities the best he could.

The historical information was also very interesting, and at times
disturbing concerning the way slaves were treated and the way corrupt men
fought with viciousness to keep their wicked slave trade, doing
so with gnashing teeth. It is truly amazing to see what a group of
Christians could do to change the world with the Hand of God pointing them in the right direction, even if it takes decades of hard work.

The book includes excerpts from Wilberforce's A Practical view of Christianity. It included his thoughts on the corrupt human nature
which I truly liked for the reason that he thought and expressed what I
think, far better than I could ever do so.

The book also contains a gallery of the locations relevant to the
history of the slave trade, portraits of Wilberforce as well as
personal letters to Wilberforce from men like John Wesley,
the public's reaction concerning his death, and an audio CD with
excerpts from A Practical View of Christianity.

Overall, this was a marvelous find and it is well worth the price.
