Move Beyond Anger to Your Calling May 3, 2009
This book has helped me to move beyond the anger of getting abruptly fired from a high paying job into my calling, just as Wil LaVeist was able to do. By using the analogy of Joseph being thrown in the well, I was able to see that what others meant for evil, God meant for good. Thank You, Wil, for helping me to move beyond the obvious, and into my calling. Your words of wisdom and insight were truly an inspiration and helped me to move on to a more permanent job and avocation.
The right book for the right time! Nov 18, 2008
This book is very timely and speaks to the heart. In a time of economic crisis and high unemployment Fired Up provides critical wisdom and insight to deal with the extreme challenges of life's transitions.
Reading this book has helped me to spot early warning signs which, in turn, helped me better align myself with management's ever-changing objectives and proactively protect my position. My boss and several of my peers, friends, and family who were downsized this year were not as fortunate and are benefitting from the tips discussed by the author.
Mr. LaVeist's transitions and spiritual journey are clearly laid out in a few steps. I enjoyed reading about his emergence out of anger and how I relate to his experiences. Fired Up is a great read for the employed, underemployed, and unemployed.
Fired Up Oct 30, 2008
In these tough economic times, many people are losing their jobs... or worried that they might. In his new book Fired Up, Wil LaVeist encourages us to have no fear!
Fired Up is a self-help book that reads like a novel- or two. In it, LaVeist tells us his story of being fired from a company that prides itself on being a quality, family-run and family values company, and how he overcame not only the financial crisis that ensued but also the feelings of betrayal. In telling us his story, LaVeist also recounts of the story of the biblical Joseph, who experienced a similar firing from- and at the hands of- his own brothers, and how God lifted him to greatness.
In this book, LaVeist brilliantly reminds us that what man may mean as evil against us, "God meant it for good," and he gives readers real, practical advice on how to survive and thrive after being terminated. It's a true must-read for employees and employers alike.
An inspiring look at disappointment Oct 11, 2008
Wil Laveist writes with honesty and candor about the devastation of being fired from a position for no other reason than office politics. He writes with such conviction about his journey through unemployment, the support of his wife, Rita and the emotional struggles of being the head of household, yet out of work. Wil does a wonderful job of placing his experience in a spiritual context. A really good read for anyone who is blindsided on the job -- and equally good for anyone who has the unpleasant task of firing an employee. Compassion, in this case, goes a long way. Wonderful book and highly recommended!
Stunning writing Oct 3, 2008
This is a stunningly written book about a topic that is not so pleasent but unfortunately becmoing more common. The book opens with a riviting story about how he got fired. This story is really nicely written and will grip your attention. The author is a newpaper reporter and you can see those writing skills come out. Then he moves the story to his trip home to tell his wife. This was also gripping. LaVeist is a really talented story teller. I won't ruin the rest of the book for you, but I will say this. Fired Up was very inspirational and uplifing. The writter is coming from a Christian perspective and uses Biblical principles to come back from a devistating experience. It gives practical advice and if you are dealing with job loss or any other type of adversity this is a book that can help you through.
