Item description for Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World (Gift Edition): Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life by Joanna Weaver...
Overview In a special gift edition, a best-selling guide for women who struggle between a longing for a deeper spiritual life and the demands of their daily responsibilities offers practical advice on how to balance work and worship, offers guilt-reducing reassurance, and explains how readers can experience less stress and greater joy while strengthening their service.
Publishers Description An invitation for every woman who's ever felt she isn't godly enough, isn't loving enough, isn't "doing "enough. The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet...but the daily demands of a busy world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Then comes Jesus, into the midst of your busy life, to extend the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters from Bethany. Tenderly, he invites you to choose "the better part"-a joyful life of intimacy with him that flows naturally into loving service. With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us-Marys and Marthas alike-can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World May 14, 2007
I teach a ladies class and we chose this book to study. We have just recently started and we are finding out that some of us are like Mary and some are like Martha. Very good book for everyone to read!
great for bible study group May 7, 2007
Enjoy reading this book, I evem listen to it on my ipod. Also have successfully suggested that our women's group at church use it for our discussions.
I am SO Martha! Apr 19, 2007
I had so many women recommend this book that I finally gave in and picked up a copy. And I was not disappointed. Using the biblical example of Mary and Martha, as well as her own personal experiences, the author points the reader to balancing the Mary/Martha in each of us in order to achieve a deeper intimacy with God. Now if I can just put all of this practical and thoughtful advice into action... I am SO Martha!
Balancing Intimacy and Service Apr 13, 2007
Living Room Intimacy versus Kitchen Service (in the words of the author), two opposite ends of the continuum of our relationship with God. God calls us to have both, yet the majority of us are unbalanced towards one direction or the other. This is the exact topic Joanna Weaver addresses in Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.
Weaver does an excellent job of exploring the good friends of Jesus, Mary and Martha, anticipating their personalities from the stories the Bible gives us about this family. She proposes to the reader each of these women's path of maturity towards a balance between service and worship through the progression of their Biblical accounts. It is easy to walk away from this book identifying with each of these women.
The author gives plenty of practical advise on evaluating one's balance of intimacy with God and service to others, as well as symptoms of imbalance in either direction. She offers many of her own ideas in achieving this balance as well as recommending many appropriate and applicable resources.
Weaver communicates on a personal level, achieving quite a rapport with her reader by the end of the book. This book is very appropriate for a women's discussion group and includes a chapter-by-chapter study guide to facilitate discussion. I do recommend this book to women wishing to deepen their intimacy with God, while at the same time serving others as Christ modeled.
