Item description for I Don't Believe in Ghosts (Lannan Translations Selection Series) by Wayne Miller Moikom Zeqo...
Between 1970 and 1974, Moikom Zeqo wrote a collection of poems called Meduza that challenged the core tenets of Albanian socialist realism. When samples were published, Zeqo's work was denounced as "hermetic, with modern influences, dangerous, [and] foreign." Meduza was suppressed until 1995, after the collapse of the Albanian communist system. I Don't Believe in Ghosts gathers the best and most translatable poems from Meduza.
Moikom Zeqo is Albania's former minister of culture and directed Albania's National History Museum. He now works as a freelance writer and journalist in Tirana.
Wayne Miller teaches at the University of Central Missouri, where he co-edits Pleiades.

Reviews - What do customers think about I Don't Believe in Ghosts (Lannan Translations Selection Series)?
His work challenged the core principles of Albanian socialist realism Mar 5, 2008
Albian-born poet Moikom Zeqo originally wrote the poems of I Don't Believe in Ghosts in his collection "Meduza", created circa 1970-74. His work challenged the core principles of Albanian socialist realism, and was therefore denounced as "hermetic, with modern influence, dangerous, [and] foreign" by the Fourth Plenary Session of the Albanian Communist Party. Harshly suppressed until 1995, when the Albanian communist system had collapsed, Zeqo's work has since earned him one of Albania's highest honors, the award of "Important Master of His Field." Each poem in I Don't Believe in Ghosts is presented in a two-page spread, in its original Albanian on the left and a superb English translation by Wayne Miller on the right. A creative, utterly mesmerizing poetry collection. "Time": Time is an enormous bird; / her one wing is day; the other, night. / Caw, she cries, and I must feed her my flesh / for the flight to continue. / Caw, caw! - my skeleton flies through the cosmos.
