Item description for Mel Bay Old Time Gospel Songbook by Wayne Erbsen...
Southern gospel classics that will warm your heart, fill your soul, and even get your toes to tapping. Most of these religious songs come from American soil, but the imagery of the poetry, and some of the twists and turns of the melodies have been borrowed from unknown songwriters in ancient times and foreign lands. The book includes a historical survey of the roots of gosel music--shape-note hymns, religious folk songs, camp meeting spirituals, and sentimental religious songs. All songs are in melody form with lyrics and guitar chords.

Reviews - What do customers think about Mel Bay Old Time Gospel Songbook?
Good book, but Erbsen has a bigger one May 23, 2008
This wonderful book was published in 1993, and it is indeed a good collection of about 50 of the best-known old-time gospel songs. In 2006, Erbsen published The Bluegrass Gospel Songbook, which includes all of the songs in this book (except "I Will Arise" and "Rock of Ages"), plus 50 more songs. I haven't seen the newer book, but the online preview of the new book looks like it's bigger and better than the older one.
Good Intro to this kind of music Aug 27, 2007
This book has good intro information on old-time gospel, which often is performed bluegrass style. There are nice, and generally accurate intros for each piece and most of the lyrics seem to be in this book. If you want to make sure you have all the verses for a certain piece, you might want to do an online search. This book has really helped me increase my repertoire! As always, MelBay does a great job!
It is what advertised. May 18, 2007
I am just learning guitar. Most tunes in the keys of A, G, D, easy enough for me to strum along. These are the songs my mother sang to me when I was younger. Love the book.
Nice collection Apr 6, 2007
This is a good introduction to Gospel Old Timey music. Most of the key signatures agree with those prevalent in my area so it works well in my Wednesday night jam sessions.
