Reviews - What do customers think about Raising You Alone?
Adds to the negative perceptions of single-parent families May 5, 2008
Don't buy this book! Negative in tone. I want to tell my child how much I love our family, and why our two-person family freedom and bond is so special, NOT that "darn, I wanted to have a co-parent to help, whine, moan, it's so hard for both of us."
Not a Message I want to send to my Child Feb 20, 2008
I'm very surprised with the other reviews. They must not be single parents. The author is not a single parent, which I realized after I read the book. The message this book sends is not a message I want my child to get. I don't know a single parent that wants children to get this message. The message this book is sending is this: I had a dream of raising you with someone else, but that didn't work out. Now we have a really hard time because I can't do it alone, and let's dream together for someone else to come and help us. The only way life will be good is if our dream (of someone else saving us) comes true. WHAT??? Now I wonder, do you have to be a single parent to know that this message is an absurd message to send to your child?
How about this: We CAN do this together.
If you are raising your child alone, and are thinking about purchasing this book, I say save your time and money. I don't want this book in my house, and I won't give it away. I don't want any child to get this message. I have never in my life thrown a book away. This will be a first.
Perfect book for a single parent Jan 3, 2007
This book got it just right! Perfect, comforting book for the child and for the adult. Well written and beautifully illustrated, this book is a joy for anyone but especially those in single-parent families.
A truly heartwarming and entertaining story Nov 4, 2005
Deftly written and colorfully illustrated by Warren Hanson, Raising You Alone is a wonderfully presented picturebook that uses a family of rabbits to illustrate the quirks and challenges that single-parent families must deal with. A truly heartwarming and entertaining story Raising You Alone presents the loving relationship of a parent and child through many day-today situations. Ideal for young readers preschool through first grade, Raising You Alone is both timely and timeless -- and should be a part of every elementary school and community library picturebook collection for young readers.
A much needed book! Oct 9, 2005
There are many single parent families in our culture and now here is a children's book about being a single parent. Raising You Alone, by Warren Hanson is a straight-forward story about the difficulties of being a single parent and the frustrations of being the kid of a single parent.
Raising You Alone discusses all the issues that face a single parent family: loss, loneliness, and the lack of money and time. But those problems are balanced by the sharing of good times and the making of memories.
Raising You Alone is a sweet book that celebrates the strength of family. It is one that will be read again and again. The message from the parent is that while there may be struggles, there will also be wonderful times and no matter what, "I will always love you, and will do my best at raising you alone." Now that is security.
Armchair Interviews says: Raising You Alone is an essential book for all of those single parent families.
