Item description for Theological Worlds: Understanding the Alternative Rhythms of Christian Belief by W. Paul Jones...

Overview
By exploring five common Christian perspectives ("theological worlds"), this volume helps readers understand the basis of their own Christian attitudes, identify the sources of their confusions about life and the church, and come to a deeper appreciation of the assumptions and motivations of others. Author W. Paul Jones demonstrates that each of the five "theological worlds" has a legitimate basis in both Scripture and tradition. He explores why the "citizens" of each world have great difficulty understanding and accepting the legitimacy of other worlds, and why people of goodwill often misconstrue the words and intentions of others. Theological Worlds offers thoughtful insight to all Christians who want to understand and deal effectively with other human beings. Christian educators will appreciate the references to literature--books, plays, songs, poetry--which illustrate the characteristics of residents of the five worlds and point toward ways to achieve nurturing experiences for students and congregations. Preachers will find the volume helpful as a means of crafting sermons that speak to the diversity of experience among their church members.

Reviews - What do customers think about Theological Worlds: Understanding the Alternative Rhythms of Christian Belief?

Helped me start to minister to people where they really live  Oct 10, 2006
This is a great, ministry-changing book. It helps you understand why your sermons and Bible studies speak to some members of your congregation but may tend to leave others cold. Then it helps you think about ways you can adjust your messages to speak to all members of your congregation. It's simple, really. While all members of your congregation share our faith, they approach their faith with different needs and different perspectives than we do. Christ can speak to all of these needs if we are open to learning about the "Theological Worlds" in which our members live their lives. Theology that leads to best practices.

Variety: Spice or Curse of Modern Life?  Jan 20, 2006
Jones here wants to provide an alternative to what bugs today's Christianity, what he refers to as: "variegated, a confederation of subcongregations that will provide alternative Worlds as variations on the common theme called Christianity."

This he intends to provide support mechanism with his "alterantive rhythms" of Christian praxis. For he is truly into practice, not just dogma.

This would be first criticism, the modern culture's rut of variation, change, and one can easily achieve that by the "style vs. substance" "life not dogma" avenue.

Jones provides this variation through rhythms of alien, warrior, outcast, fugitive, victim/refugee, etc.

What he totally fails with this variation however is clear Law and Gospel separation, and means of grace orientation, which lacking thus doesn't allow anyone to practice one true faith handed down through the ages.

Wanting to find creataive corner to offer in this confused, comingled pluralistic, individualistic, post-modernistic jumble that Jones is trying to offer relief from, his alternative becomes just another of confused heaps trying to be something to everyone turning out to be nothing but deception from truth, be it boring or ancient to modern academic types.

Not recommended as aid to what truly ails the church.
