Reviews - What do customers think about Luigi Ghirri: Atlante?
Macro shots of maps? Yes... May 13, 2009
This book is nicely produced, 12x12 on good paper. The photography content is 34 macro shots of parts of maps printed 5x7 in the center of the 12x12 pages. Some of them are as interesting as the Dayton photo shown at the top of this this site page. Many are just subtle topographic gradients from open expanses of a map. The book has an essay in 5 pages of dense 9.5 inch columns of sanserif type. The author claims you can't understand Ghirri without knowing his fundamental work: Atlante. The essay explains that Ghirri liked atlases as a boy and particularly the landscape photography showing the ground level view of certain areas of the map. All in all this book is very heady and not enjoyable except as an idea: These are graphic representations the places I would like to go photograph... I love Ghirri's "Its beautiful here, isn't it..." and highly recommend it.
