What makes this book stand out from other books in the field of organization and management of schools is that this book attempts to connect school organization theory with the school effectiveness knowledge base. Until now the branches of research and theory development have hardly inspired one another. School effectiveness research has largely been focused on instructional variables promoting effectiveness in terms of student achievement. Research into the organization and management of schools has not benefitted from the findings of school effectiveness research, and has not fully investigated how different school organizational arrangements influence the effectiveness of these institutions. This book attempts to close the gap between both theories of development by first presenting the school effectiveness perspective. In each chapter a comprehensive overview of the knowledge base on the central theme is presented and the question concerning what is known about the subject as a school effectiveness enhancing condition is addressed. Finally, a conclusion is drawn concerning our insight into the school organizational factors influencing the effectiveness of schools and a proposal for the further integration and cross-fertilization of both approaches is being formulated with the goal to improve our understanding of how schools function and which factors make them effective.
