Item description for Managing Schools Towards High Performance (Contexts of Learning) by Visscher...
What makes this book stand out from other books in the field of organization and management of schools is that this book attempts to connect school organization theory with the school effectiveness knowledge base. Until now the branches of research and theory development have hardly inspired one another. School effectiveness research has largely been focused on instructional variables promoting effectiveness in terms of student achievement. Research into the organization and management of schools has not benefitted from the findings of school effectiveness research, and has not fully investigated how different school organizational arrangements influence the effectiveness of these institutions. This book attempts to close the gap between both theories of development by first presenting the school effectiveness perspective. The latter functions as the central perspective for the organization theoretical chapters: the structuring of the primary process at school level, school coordination and control, teacher motivation and commitment, school leadership, environmental alignment and human resource development. In each chapter a comprehensive overview of the knowledge base on the central theme is presented and the question concerning what is known about the subject as a school effectiveness enhancing condition is addressed. Finally, a conclusion is drawn concerning our insight into the school organizational factors influencing the effectiveness of schools and a proposal for the further integration and cross-fertilization of both approaches is being formulated with the goal to improve our understanding of how schools function and which factors make them effective.

School managers, do yourself a favor and read this book! Oct 2, 1999
What is the relationship between school organization and school effectiveness? Until now it looked like there was no relationship at all. Scholars from both fields kept stubbornly driving their own lane. Visscher is the first one to cross the line. In this fascinating study, that at many instances reads like a novel - rather unusual in this field of knowledge, as it is in every field of knowledge - Visscher manages not only to reveal many unexpected common grounds between school organization and school effectiveness, but also to give us a lot of promising guidelines for how to improve school effectiveness by adjusting the school organization. School managers from all over the world: do yourself, your school and your students a favor and take note of all the eye-opening findings Visschers has brought together for you.
