Item description for Middleburg Mystique: A Peek Inside the Gates of Middleburg, Virginia (Capital Hometown Guides) by Vicky Moon...
"Middleburg Mystique" reveals the charm of this village of 650 residents and the surrounding swath of horse farms just 50 miles west of Washington, D.C. Through the years, there have been scandalous stories of divorce - when actor Robert Duvall's wife ran off with the poolman - and murders among the rich such as when arms heiress Susan Cummings shot her Argentinean polo-playing lover. It is a community that will gladly gossip about your misdeeds then turn around and protect you as if you were family. It is also a town that has captivated many well-known personalities from the Kennedys, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Wagner, and Oliver North - all of whom have called Middleburg home. A peek behind the grand stone entrances of massive estates with names such as "The Meadows" or "Heathfield" that belong to families such as the Firestones, Mellons, and Marriotts and along dirt roads named "Frogtown" and "Sally Mill", where you will find that, yes, there must be something in that well water.

Middlebury Mystique Jan 19, 2007
Good gossipy fast read. Very entertaining, when you know a little bit about the area.
So So Dec 30, 2006
I enjoying visiting Middleburg and had hopes for this one but for some reason it didn't keep my attention. The section about the Kennedy's was interesting and of course what would Middleburg be without a few sex scandals. Ended up just browsing through this one instead of reading it cover to cover which is surprising because the other reviewers mostly seemed to like it.
If you love the "country" life! Jul 31, 2006
I loved this book. It was very entertaining, and at times, "laugh out loud" funny. The Middleburg lifestyle is written about in a charming style. It makes me want to move there myself, or at the very least, visit in the spring for the stable tour!
Don't Do It Dec 16, 2004
Some books written by residents or insiders provide fascinating insights into a community and are well worth reading in preparation for a visit. This one doesn't and isn't. It promises more than it delivers and the author's shallow observations and uninteresting writing style compound the sin.

MIDDLEBURG MYSTIQUE is a book that helps to continue the idea that Middleburg is the magic town for the rich, famous, and those who want to be seen with the rich and famous. I live about 20 miles away from Middleburg, and it is a great place to go for lunch or dinner. The town is charming and historic and it's always fun to browse the antique shops.
Vicky Moon did a good job in writing about Middleburg. Her style is pleasant and she provides a lot of detailed information. I'm sure that the long time residents of the town had a few laughs over some of the outrageous behavior that's mentioned in the book. I think that adding the section called, Hunting Terms was a good idea. For those of us who are not familiar with fox hunting or equestrian activity, it was nice to have those terms explained. The author tells lots of stories and antidotes and with the exception of some of the nationally known residents like the Kennedy's, I really didn't know much about the families or "old guard" who live in the Middleburg area. I found the book to be very enlightening.
