Item description for Mama for President: Good Lord, Why Not? by Vicki Lawrence & Monty Aidem...
Overview Lawrence, writing as Thelma Harper, the outspoken, irascible widow from the television series "Mama's Family," dishes on the other candidates, tackles the big issues, and runs a campaign that has everyone running.
Listen Up, America
The solution to your problems has plopped right in your lap. Mama is running for president
Discover How President Thelma Harper would handle:
Immigration--I'll tell you how we solve the problem at our border: build senior citizen housing all along the American side. No one sees more than a nosy old lady peeking through her window blinds.
Emergency Preparedness--Emergency response should be in the hands of the experts who have the resources and determination to respond quickly. I'm talking about Domino's and Pizza Hut.
Airport Security--As long as we have to take our shoes off, I will install a shoe-buffing brush inside the X-ray machine so your shoes will get a little shine as they go through.
Animals--If I have a dog at the White House, I will have it spayed or neutered to control its sex drive, which is something that might have been a good idea for some of our previous presidents.
Thelma Harper is running for president, and the free world will never be the same

Hilarious May 14, 2009
Who'da thunk it? Vicki Lawrence was all set to become a dental hygenist. Thank God she didn't - and that Carol Burnett had the good sense to hire her on her variety show - or we'd never have Thelma "Mama" Harper, one of the funniest and brazen characters in all of television history. I vividly remember the fall of 1982, at age 6, when "Mama's Family" came on TV. The promo spots for the show freaked me out - exactly WHO was this mean old lady who was going to be on TV every week? Anyhow, I didn't watch "Mama's Family" until long after it was cancelled and in reruns - and I saw it before ever knowing that the character originated on the "Carol Burnett Show". It's amazing that Vicki started playing Mama at age 25, with no makeup and only a wig and glasses. And 35 years later, Vicki is still playing Mama.
Anyhow - needless to say, the book is a nice satire, very timely (and timeless!) and relevant. And the tone is just right...like Mama was in the same room. I enjoyed every bit of it and look forward to re-reading it over the years. In fact, the book is 'by' Thelma Harper (as told to Vicki Lawrence and Monty Aidem)...and I tried to imagine Mama's voice while reading it, which helped. There are also many nice little side bars that pop up on every third or fourth page (like people who Mama thinks should be tasered, and her answers to questions like 'Mama, what would you do about gun control? Answer: That depends...are we talking about squirt guns here??') Also included are some of Mama's recipes that she'll be serving in the White House if she's elected...if I cooked, I would definitely be making some of them.
I did kinda wish that Mama had made some references to her family and friends - like Eunice, Ellen, Vint, Naomi, Iola, Bubba....it woulda made the book that much funnier I imagine.
Let's hope this becomes available as an audio book sometime soon.
Mama Rocks!!! Jan 31, 2009
This is a great book to read out loud to the whole family for some family time - parental guidance suggested, of course. Usually political humor just ticks me off, but this book is hilarious and light-hearted. There are even some yummy recipes included - you know - the very meals Mama would throw down while screaming at Naomi to quit painting her nails, Vinton to quit acting like a moron, Bubba to quit combing his hair and Iola to quit mooching a meal! Buy it and share the Mamalove with others. You won't regret it.
