Pictures and words on winter are presented in six meditations on each of four rhythms that mark every season: anticipate, attend, appreciate, and accept. Marabeth Sonenson's photo subjects range from a pussy willow to a distant mountain top. Vicki Kessler's text consists of original poems and guided journal exercises with space for notes.
Her "Cradle" meditation begins "Cradled by a winter's day passing, /shadows extend themselves from bare-branched trees, /rocking me in the rhythm of cold hours." Readers are invited to reflect on ways to open themselves to the daily gifts of the universe and express something we anticipate this winter. Kessler suggests recording the everyday gifts of life to create a "warm, inviting space in a familiar place that cradles your body and your spirit." The accompanying photo features a snowy trolley trail in Waterloo, Iowa.
A red-hatted snowman opens the Melt My Heart meditation. Kessler refers to stick and twig remnants and bright red tribute atop a crooked, smiling countenance. She wonders if the disappointments of love have robbed the snowman of its power to "liquefy the doubts that linger, frosty remnants of long ago." We are asked to reflect and write about the image of love as part of creation. The activity for this section focuses on a diagram of our significant others and the gifts each brings to our lives.
The glossy stock and color photos make this work an ideal gift for self or others. The introduction includes basic techniques for keeping a journal, and an image index contains brief information on each photo.
