Finding Release in the Midst of a Holding Pattern Jun 25, 2009
Verna Foster Harvey has crafted a unique combination of instruction, an interactive study guide, inspirational devotional thoughts, and prayer meditations in her book "The Blessedness of Waiting on God: How to Deal with the Stress of Holding Patterns."
Harvey describes the term holding pattern as it relates to her personal experiences of waiting on God, as a time of preparation for service and of providing clarity during the training process. She uses examples of Old and New Testament characters that also experienced similar holding patterns as they were being prepared to fulfill God's purpose for their lives.
Personally, I found the applications especially practical and relevant in the chapter titled "Experiencing Holding Patterns in Today's World." Harvey discussed topics including weight loss plateaus, pregnancy, unanswered prayers, and terminal illness. She also addresses issues of perseverance, focus, as well as providing important resource tools to draw on during the waiting period.
"The Blessedness of Waiting on God" delivers a meaningful message of hope for anyone in the midst of a dry, unfruitful season while in a holding pattern of uncertainty. Harvey writes with compassion, empathy, and understanding. Her work is encouraging and inspiring.

Blessed Waiting Nov 8, 2007
We all wait on God. Like the holding pattern for an aircraft stacked up waiting to land, we pray and then await His timing. It may be waiting for a job, word from a loved one, a baby, or an end to spiritual drought. God uses the time of waiting to protect us, to prepare us for service, to provide clarity and power, and to give us opportunity to pray. Verna Foster Harvey draws on her own experience of waiting and that of Abram and Sarai, Joshua, Saul and King David, Jonah, Jesus, Lazarus, and Lydia. Each chapter starts with a prayer birthed out of the Spirit and finishes with questions inviting application of the chapter in the reader's life.
Even as I write, Verna is caught up in another season of waiting, waiting for the healing of her husband as he recovers from brain surgery.
I needed to see the blessing of God in my own season of waiting for the healing of my marriage. Thank you Verna for sharing from the Lord. Psalms 27:13-14 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. (14) Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
