Reviews - What do customers think about X Worship 2006?
A fresh perspective on worship music Mar 18, 2007
In 2003 & 2004, I was big on the praise & worship genre. But it seems after two years of listening to so much of the genre, I began to burn out on it. Since the songs have to be designed so that a whole congregation can sing them, they are limited in what they can do; in other words, they have to be fairly simple structurally and have to be fairly predictable.
But just because I was tired of the praise & worship genre didn't mean I didn't want to worship God through song anymore. So I was very glad to come across this gem in late summer 2005, a collection of songs that were worship songs but most were not songs you'd ever hear in church.
I already had two album in the X series of compilation albums -- the party-mood X 2003 and the more serious X 2004. These compilations feature modern rock, emo, rapcore, and other alternative styles in Christian music. This worship compilation does not disappoint in its choice of music. It's really great to have a worship album with artists such as Underoath, Thousand Foot Krutch, Switchfoot, Showbread, and Relient K on it. Some bands I'd never heard of before, so I was introduced to new musicians: Edison Glass, Dizmas, The Showdown, and Showbread.
The album starts out with a song that we've sung in church so many times that it's worn out by now, "My Glorious" by Delirious?, so I always skip that one. The next four songs are a little too mellow for me, despite being from groups like Underoath and Thousand Foot Krutch. (It's still better to have these, though, than more standard praise & worship fare.)
The album really gets going for me with track #6, "Everything About You" by Sanctus Real. I like both the music and lyrics of this chorus: "Everything about You takes my breath away" while the background vocals sing "Hallelujah!" This track is followed by "Release The Deep" by Telecast. I have both albums by Telecast and find them to be good for a vertical focus. Next is "Finding Who We Are," a song from Kutless's worship album Strong Tower. Jeremy Camp follows with "I Wait For The Lord," then David Crowder Band with "Do Not Move." This was my first hearing of an actual recording by David Crowder Band. We sing some David Crowder songs in church, but not this one, and I was interested in it immediately, with its different style. It's from the album A Collision, which I bought in 2006 and listened to frequently.
Those five songs are the climax of the album for me. I like some other tracks on here and listen to all the songs on the album, but I listen to those five songs the most. Also of note on here is "In The Burning," by Something Like Silas, whose album was #10 in my 2004 Favorite CDs list.
If you're tired of the same old styles in praise & worship music and want something different, this is a great album to get. It is also a great introduction to various modern rock and alternative Christian musicians.
MUST have C.D. right here... May 1, 2006
Every single song on this C.D. is full of life! I've never such a mixture of songs that were so electricly deep and spilling over with love for God. Warning: This C.D. won't leave your player for weeks...and for me, months. ENJOY!
