music and devotion in late-medieval Netherlands  May 12, 2009
This thorough volume offers the reader an embarrassment of riches on a fascinating book (referred to throughout simply as Zwolle VI). Still in its original binding, Zwolle VI consists of an incunable bound together with a neumatic manuscript of Latin hymn. It seems to have been intended for private devotion by members of the Brethren of the Common Life, a Beghard-like religious community that formed the center of the movement known as the Devotio Moderna in the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Low Countries. Hascher-Burger does a magnificent job in outlining the religious milieu in which the text arose, exploring the significance of music in private devotion, and situating the text within a broader theological and devotional context.

Although Hascher-Burger directs the lion's share of the book to the manuscript and its contents, it is worth noting that she gives brief but lucid accounts of the two printed texts (which are not, however, included in the edition or facsimile): the De spiritualibus ascensionibus of fourteenth-century Dutch theologian Gerhard Zerbolt van Zutphen and the De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione of the thirteenth-century Franciscan David of Augsburg (the former can be found in English translation by John van Engen in the Paulist Press Classics of Western Spirituality volume on the Devotio Moderna). Especially significant in the incunable are the marginalia - they outline a weekly reading schedule for these two spiritual works which thematically matches the hymns in the manuscripts almost exactly.

Of the songs in Zwolle VI, four are unique to the manuscript, the rest can be found in as many as thirteen other manuscripts (as well as numerous incunabula, in the case of those attributed to Thomas a Kempis and Peter Damian). Many take melodies from well-known liturgical hymns and sequences (the Pange lingua is the most popular - four hymns in the manuscript adopt this melody); this borrowing in turn echoed the paraliturgical uses of the hymns themselves. In many instances, the choice of tune was dictated by the meter of the text - music was consistently subordinated in favor of spiritual/textual content. The texts of the songs themselves focus on a staple of the Devotio Moderna: the "four last things" (death, judgment, hell, and heaven). The rubrication often offers significant insight into their interpretation: seventeen of the twenty-five hymns are rubricated and the rubrics tend to contain a summary of the content rather than any reference to their paraliturgical use in private devotion.

It is worth noting to the non-German reader that pp 333 - 337 contain an excellent English summary of the text and its background, allowing a scholar conversant in Latin to get a very good introduction to the historical situation of Zwolle VI before plunging into the Latin hymns. All in all, this astute and timely volume offers us a detailed glimpse into the musical life of a pivotal religious movement.
