Overview Michael was eight years old the Christmas he lost his brother to the pond's icy depths while they were skating. Thirty years later Michael is the neighborhood Grinch. But when another holiday disaster strikes and his own cherished young son loses his spirit to live, Michael searches deep within himself to root out the anger, the fear, and the pain of the past.
This classic Christmas story of rekindled spirit is the inspiration behind the 2013 holiday film "Angels Sing, " starring Harry Connick Jr., Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Lyle Lovett. This is the tale of Michael, who was eight years old on the Christmas Day he lost his brother David. The day had started out well--Michael and David opened their presents, and much to their delight, they had both received ice skates from Santa. With great excitement they set out to the pond behind their grandparents' house in New Mexico to try them out. But the pond wasn't safe, and David didn't make it out of its icy cold depths. For Michael, the meaning of Christmas changed forever that day.Thirty years later Michael is the neighborhood Grinch. "To me the only wonder of Christmas is not why that tragedy marked me so," Michael says, "but how the rest of my family can seem so completely unscathed." He scowls at his neighbors' fervent holiday traditions and at his own children, who want nothing more than to string Christmas lights through their front yard. But when another holiday disaster strikes and his own cherished young son loses his spirit to live, Michael searches deep within himself to root out the anger, the fear, and the pain of the past. Can he bear to remember exactly what happened that Christmas Day? And will he make peace with this past for the sake of his own children?"

Pretty good Christmas tale.......... Dec 29, 1999
I dont want to sound like a grinch but I found When Angels Sing to be a ho-hum book. Oh it had its moments but overall it was an average story that probably has been done a million times in movies and series like Little House on the Prairie. I did like its theme of families together through thick and thin. I do recommend the book but I dont want other readers going into it like I did expecting a great little story but getting an average tale. It is still a good book but I just dont see it as a classic. Sorry........
A Touching Story. Dec 13, 1999
I could not put down "When Angels Sing." The story was so well written and would touch the coldest heart. It will have particular meaning for anyone who has ever faced Christmas with a broken heart or a grieving spirit. I was warmed by the patience and love shown by the main character's wife. Everyone will be able to relate to someone in this story, and each reader will come away with a renewed feeling of hope.
My Favorite Christmas Book Ever Dec 10, 1999
Turk Pipkin has written a beautiful, moving Christmas story. I guarantee reading this book every year will become a tradition for you and your family. I will be stuffing a large number of stockings with "When Angels Sing."
When Angels Sing Dec 4, 1999
This little book is a sweet and soulful Christmas tale about loss, redemption and the power of hope. How do we let go of the sorrows of the past and embrace the present moment? How do we give our families the true gifts of this season? Turk Pipkin has written a lovely fable that answers those questions. He has also done the impossible and created a Los Angeles filled with Christmas cheer. I received this book as a gift and I intend to return the favor and send along a sleigh full to my family and friends.
When Angels sing - a personal review Dec 4, 1999
I don't know how long it has been since I have read a new Christmas story and felt that I was reading a classic my great grandchildren would be reading. Moving, beautiful, sensitive, enduring, these are some of the words that come to mind. Buy yourself a Christmas present and curl up before the roasting chestnuts. Without giving anything away, this is a delightful story about Christmas and about family, about sibling relationships, and about the magic inside us all.
