Item description for Tomie's Little Christmas Pageant by Tomie DePaola...

The story of the birth of Jesus Christ is told as the children paint the sets, hang the stars, and get dressed in their costumes to play the parts of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds in their school Christmas pageant.

Publishers Description
Children dressed as Mary and Joseph, the angels, the shepherds and the three wise men perform in their school Christmas pageant. The book opens with a scene of the class getting ready-hanging stars, painting scenery, and putting on costumes as a sheep on wheels "looks on." Then the story of the first Christmas unfolds in a simple text narrated by a red-headed boy. Tomie dePaola's bright colors and appealing scenes full of warmth and humor provide an original approach to a well-loved story in a board book perfect for the very young.

Originally published in 1978 as The Christmas Pageant in a longer picture book version, Tomie's Little Christmas Pageant with new text will delight a whole new audience.

More About Tomie DePaola

Tomie DePaola Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.

It drove him through the years of teaching, designing greeting cards and stage sets, and painting church murals until 1965, when he illustrated his first children's book, Sound, by Lisa Miller for Coward-McCann. Eventually, freed of other obligations, he plunged full time into both writing and illustrating children's books.

He names Fra Angelico and Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as major influences on his work, but he soon found his own unique style. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his "singular attainment in children's literature," the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his "continued distinguished contribution," and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration.

Tomie dePaola has published almost 200 children's books in fifteen different countries. He remains one of the most popular creators of books for children, receiving more than 100,000 fan letters each year.

Reviews - What do customers think about Tomie's Little Christmas Pageant?

Tomie's Little Christmas Pageant  Jul 22, 2008
ISBN 0399239596 - On a board book reviewing streak, I was starting to get a little bored (no pun intended) with the story-less books that teach counting, shapes, colors, et al. This book came along at just the right moment AND turns out to be better than I'd expected.

The first page says the class is going to do a play about the first Christmas, the remainder of the book is written from the viewpoint of the narrator of that play. You know the story, Christian or not, so I'll keep it short: Mary and Joseph have a child in a manger, name him Jesus, the angels tell the shepherds and 3 kings follow a star, and for 2 thousand years or so we've been celebrating his birth.

This really is a nicely done book. It retells the story of the first Christmas, neglecting to go into the kinds of details (virgin birth, taxes, etc) that a child won't really understand anyway. It makes the story simple and straightforward and will make a great addition to any kids' library, particularly the library of young Christian readers. Jewish readers will find that the book doesn't conflict with their view of Jesus as a prophet and not the son of god, because that isn't mentioned.

In fact, that is something that you might view as either a negative or a non-factor, but is worth mentioning: the story of the birth of Jesus is nice but nowhere in the book does it say WHY anyone would celebrate his birth. It doesn't say much of anything about who this baby is, just that Christmas is his birthday. This can be used as a chance to explain your own beliefs about why we celebrate it, or it can be viewed as a gaping hole in the story.

Also, a small thing - on the first page, the book is written in the first person and says "I will tell the story". There is only one person in the illustration that appears to be "looking at" the reader. On the next page, it is a different person who is telling the story. On the hilarious side, the angels 2,000+ years ago sing "Joy to World" - written in the early 18th century, at least 1700 years later!
