Dr. KC Hinter is a consulting engineering chemist who specializes in mercury analysis. Working in this male dominated field KC often finds herself left out of the Good Old Boys (GOB) discussions, information sessions, and activities. This fact of life irritates KC to no end but she sees the situation as merely part of the job.
KC never imagined that not being part of the GOB would actually be detrimental to her health. However, when KC reveals that ABP is polluting the bay with mercury, she starts to realize how far reaching the GOB actually extends. Suddenly she finds herself kidnapped and in very real danger of losing her life.
These Things Don't Happen is a fast paced story with some very clever dialogue. I love that the main character, KC, states her confusion at how these things could actually be happening to her, a very normal person. "That kind of thing only happens in novels and movies." This questioning aspect of the main character not only adds a bit of humour to the situation but also lends an extra aspect of realism into the storyline.
