Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging has evolved to a valuable tool for detection, diagnosis and management of breast cancer. Analysis of the multi-temporal image data however poses new challenges for human readers, demanding new tools for computer-aided detection and diagnosis. Based on recent advances in pattern recognition and statistical learning theory, the author Thorsten Twellmann investigates different applications of modern supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques for advanced analysis of MR studies of the breast. Due to their data-driven nature, the proposed methods allow to automatically extract relevant diagnostic information by exploiting the statistical characteristics with which pathological findings appear in the image data. The described applications include tumor detection, tissue classification and efficient data visualization.
