Reviews - What do customers think about Nelson's NKJV Study Bible - Personal Size?
Great content, questionable quality Oct 16, 2008
I love Bibles and the Word of God; I own several Bibles in various translations and types by various publishers. This is the "older" version of Nelson's Study Bible, it's recently been updated and revised into a 2nd edition. I bought this Bible to replace my NIV study Bible with the more literal and accurate-in-my-opinion New King James Version.
I own three different KJV and NKJV Bibles published by Thomas Nelson Publishers, and they are all of good quality; the leather bindings are flexible and have a quality feel (even for bonded leather). My Spirit-Filled Life Bible is the best of the three. The British tan genuine leather binding is one of the best I've seen outside of a premium "exotic" calf or goatskin smythe sewn binding.
My Nelson Bibles also have great content, and the translations are concise and accurate as ever. The font is also sharp (despite being small, even for my young eyes at 6.75 size font) and clean/clear. The papers are also of good quality and not too opaque like on other Bibles. However, this Nelson Bible was the exception. The content and layout was great, the study aids were helpful and insightful, the cross references were great and thorough, the font was good, and the paper was of good quality.
The problem was the binding and the finish. My Bible arrived with some of the pages still un-cut from the factory (I had to cut them apart), and the binding started peeling away after 6 months of use. I had to cut some blank pages out (they would have fallen out) and glue up the binding. My other gripe is the size. It's listed as a "personal size" bible, but this thing is huge. The length and width aren't the problem, it's the thickness. I measured it and it's over 2 inches thick. It's hard to tote around, and is awkward when I needed to look up a Scripture or browse the concordance.
Speaking of the concordance, if you are looking for a good concordance in a study Bible, look no further. This has the best concordance I've ever seen in a Bible. It's 195 pages and has helped me find Scriptures quickly, even when I can only remember one or two words of them! As far as I know, Holman, Zondervan, Cambridge, Tyndale, or any other publishers haven't mmade a concordance as good as Nelson's.
Overall, a great Bible content-wise, but quality is lacking, something I've noticed that has steadily deteriorated on Nelson's "in house" Bibles in recent years. Nelson has launched a premium line (their Signature Series) of Bibles that are awesome quality, but they start at $100 and go up, and are proving to be hard to get.
If you are looking for a good quality, thorough, concise, and up-t-odate Study Bible, I recommend the Spirit-Filled Life Bible by Jack Hayford. I just bought it, and it's the best Bible (content-wise, any Bible is great) I've ever owned.
heavy Jun 4, 2008
I bought this bible for a friend. We are both traveling because we live in Suriname for a few years. I bought this thinking that I was getting him a small bible that would fit in his suitcase when he goes back to the states. I didn't want him to have to leave it behind. It turns out that it is really heavy, and thick, even though the paper is not that strong or well made. It is not a bad compelation of the bible, I'm just disappointed because it is not what I thought that I was buying when I read "personal size"

Good Study Bible Mar 27, 2008
Great Bible the study guides at the bottom are helpful, along with the charts and descriptions of each book in the bible. Also the index in the back is awaome. I f you are struglling with say prayer youo can look up prayer/praying/pray in the back and there are many scriptures that you can look up that portain to prayer. I had another Bible like it but it doesnt have as many words and scritpures in the back. Great for Bible study, because you can use the guides on parts that you dont understand or what to get more background on or just study without them.
nelsons study bible paper back May 14, 2007
Nelsons study bible is great. Most verses are footnoted and there are easy to read summaries before each book of the bible. After reading nelsons study bible I now have no desire to read my original bible which is not a study bible. Also the paper back version is good b/c it is small enough that you can take it anywhere and not very expensive at about $15.00 new. If you have reservations about this study bible buy the papaer back as it is the least expensive and decide for yourself if you want to purchase the more expensive "larger" versions. Only draw back is that this version has small print for those who have trouble w/eyes.
