Item description for Regina Silsby's Phantom Militia by Tom Brodeur...
Overview Candlelight shimmered on a narrow stair. Down the planks wobbled an old man, his bare legs protruding beneath his nightshirt. In one hand he clutched a lighted taper, in the other a pistol. His hair ws tousled, his cheeks unshaved, and with blinking eyes he surveyed the chamber...he gasped and toppled backward. "Saints alive," he said. "'Tis the King's Chapel ghost." Once again the redcoat army has caught a case of the jitters. Has the fearsome specter of Regina Silsby returned to haunt the streets of Boston? Someone betrays their every plan to the minutemen. But who is it, or...what? Major Cauldon tightens his grip and hopes that even a ghost can get careless.

"Haiku" Is a Delight! Jun 7, 2005
My children (ages 6 and 8) really enjoyed the book "Haiku on My Shoe" when we read it aloud together. It is short enough to be read in one sitting, yet has a chapter book style that young readers will appreciate. The author has a real gift for making the children in the book come alive and the situations portrayed made me remember the real challenges and joys of being a kid in elementary school. The book communicates a great message about reaching out to others with kindness and overcoming social barriers to develop friendships. The book has the added bonus of teaching about haiku and oragami. My children were eager to follow the directions included at the end for making a snowflake and an oragami bird. Make a cup of hot cocoa and find a cozy spot to enjoy this simple, yet engaging story!
