Item description for Commentary-Philippians (NIV Application Commentary) by Frank S. Thielman...
Overview Discover not only the original meaning of Philippians, but also how Paul's message speaks powerfully today. This commentary is part of the NIV Application Commentary series.
Publishers Description Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into a modern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it can speak powerfully today.

Reviews - What do customers think about Commentary-Philippians (NIV Application Commentary)?
An excellent commentary from an excellent series! Jul 3, 2001
The NIV Application Commentary Series is one of the best commentary series I have ever encountered. Each commentary goes through the text of its respective book and 1) grapples with the original meaning, 2) finds bridging concepts from other passages of Scripture and historical sources, and 3) gleens present day applications out of the biblical text. While this commentary is sound theologically, its focus is more pastoral. It seeks to answer the question, "How do I live by these principles today?" The Philippians commentary follows this template with great success. One of the most profound themes of the commentary, and the book of Philippians, deals with the question of suffering. It is both intellectually stimulating and painfully practical.
