Reviews - What do customers think about The New Testament And Psalms: Revised Standard Version, Dark Blue, Second Catholic Edition?
Looks much better than its picture May 20, 2008
My advice to anyone who is put off by the picture is to buy anyway.
The pic for this item makes it look like the leather binding is in phone-booth blue. I almost couldn't bring myself to buy it because of the color. But the convenience of having the RSV in an easily-portable format was too great. As it turns out, the leather is a beautiful, deep blue-black color. It could easily be mistaken for black in low light.
The typeface is very suitable- overall, this is the level of book design quality that is usually reserved for Episcopalians (OUP) and Buddhists (Shambhala, et al). You'll give thanks yet again for Ignatius Press for bringing these quality standards to Catholic publishing, where there seems to be a penetential mentality, e.g. horrible paperback bibles printed on phone-book paper, the dowdy hand missals and breviaries from Catholic Book Publishing that look like a Junior League cookbook from 1962.
Well Done Edition Mar 4, 2008
This little NT and Psalms is quite compact and, at the same time, uses a very readable font size. The RSV-CE is, no doubt, an arguable translation for many of our brethren, but I like it. This bible is nicely bound and I like it quite well. Kudos to Ignatius Publishing. Fr. Fessio hits another home run!
Gem of Bibles Nov 5, 2007
This edition is just a gem. Looking for a handy yet readable New Testament and Psalms in an attractive quality package? This is it. When I opened this Bible I felt as though I'd taken a book from my grandfather's library. The binding is handsome and the new typeset is large enough to easily read on the cream colored pages. Very easy on the eyes. All notes are included in the appendix in the back, leaving all space on the page for the biblical text. The Psalms are in a single column format. It has the traditional look and feel fine leather bound books of the past. This is perfect as a gift Bible that will more likely be read rather than put on a shelf. Worth more than the price. I am one who prefers the beauty of the RSV to other english language versions that tend to read at lower reading comprehension levels. I too look forward to receiving the complete Bible in this edition with the leather binding.
Second Catholic Edition Finest RSV Yet Feb 14, 2007
The Ignatius Press edition of the RSV Bible is the finest edition of the RSV yet. Although there is some criticsm of the RSV from some conservative scholars and Bible students, it is actually an excellent and accurate translation. Following in the KJV, ASV tradition, the RSV CE includes variorum renderings of passages that reflect traditional doctrinal interpretation. This new Ignatius edition has been further revised to conform to the Liturgiam Authenticum 2003, making it approved for study. The single biggest issue with any translation is the canon: the RSV CE includes all the Canonical books of the Western Church, and therefore contains a more authentic canon. This is a very useful tool for ecumenical Bible study as it relies on a Reformation foundation for translation, but in an authentic Catholic version. Unlike previous Catholic Bibles that were large, unwieldly and cumbersome, this is a finely crafted, handy and lightweight volume - easily carried to Church or studies. It is an excellent gift Bible for any occasion. Highest recommendation. The New Testament and Psalms is just as nice.
A beautiful (corrected) edition of the RSV Oct 29, 2006
This is an exquisitely handsome, bonded-leather edition of the RSV New Testament and Psalms. The medium blue cover with gold embossed iconography of Christ and the four Evangelists is eye-catching and a sermon in itself. The page layout is easy on the eyes, with readable type on fine cream-colored paper. The changes/improvements to the RSV text in this second Catholic edition of the Ignatius Bible should for the most part be welcomed by orthodox Christians of whatever theological tradition. I actually prefer this to the English Standard Version -- it's certainly a more nicely bound Bible -- and I look forward to receiving the complete Ignatius Bible, 2nd edition, in the next several days.
