Item description for Tacita Dean: FLOH by Tacita Dean...

The images in FLOh are photographs discovered by Tacita Dean in flea markets across Europe and America. These portraits, holiday snapshots, documents of banal occurrences or spectacular views have all been retrieved and given a new existence. They keep the silence of the flea market; the silence they had when they were found; the silence of the lost object. This, however, is found photography with a twist. In FLOH, it is presented as art: beautifully printed in a linen cover, slipcased volume, and each copy of the book is signed and numbered by the artist. Eventually, Tacita Dean stopped going to flea markets for fear of finding an image that "should have been in the book", but then resolved to believe that there isn't, and can never be, a final version to this collection. FLOH exists in the continuum and will one day return ownerless and silent to its origins in the flea market.

Reviews - What do customers think about Tacita Dean: FLOH?

You should really pick up this book while you have the chance before it eventually sells out and the secondary market takes over pricing. FLOH made the Hasselblad Open Book list and was recently included in Parr and Badger's The Photobook, volume 2, with good reason. It's a beautifully produced work and Dean is beginning to get more recognition for her subtle and interesting work. Don't sleep!
A beautiful book, a strange book  Apr 5, 2006
"FLOH" is made up entirely of hundreds of photographs found or purchased at German flea markets (floh markts), with the photos artfully arranged and sized, and presented without captions or text of any kind.
The book's photos range from a shirtless man carrying a large icicle, to a turn of the century little boy happily feeding chickens, to three women carrying giant leaves, to a man standing by exotic waterfalls, to hippies playing lawn darts. Some are funny, some are intriguing, some are both. Many of the photos are historic, many are puzzling, and all are presented in their original colors or tints, and thematically connected. The lack of commentary makes every picture a mystery, and makes every picture the seed of a story. A writer having problems with inspiration could find the perfect solution to his writer's block right here.
Tacita Dean has conceived and executed something unique and beautiful here. "FLOH" would make an excellent coffee table book, but it's also the sort of thing perfect for passing around at parties, puzzling over with a friend, or studying by yourself. It's the sort of thing that suggests it holds the mysteries of the universe within its pages...although maybe it only holds clues.
Tacita's latest treasure  Mar 8, 2002
This is a hilarious collection of photos Tacita picked up at German flea markets (Floh means "flea" in German), but it brings up some serious ideas. There is no text in the book except for the title on the cover. So without any text to put these pictures in context, the viewer is left to imagine the stories behind them. These are concrete records of existance, yet they don't mean anything to us looking at them. Because she includes photos of a similar nature yet completely unrelated to one another, these individual experiences show us universals we have in common. This is an excellent work loaded with intellectual implications; a true joy to look through.
