Reviews - What do customers think about The Theory of Beauty in the Classical Aesthetics of Japan?
not quie what i expected, but better in many ways Dec 5, 2006
As someone whose initial exposure to japan was through pop culture,my expectations from this book were somehwat different from what is presented in this book. As a philosophiccal or more accurately spiritual writer,Izutsu explains japanese ideas of beauty from a perspective which is not based on the visual dimension per se,but the deeeper reality that informs it. Izutzu himself always uses a straightforward prose,he tries to explain other worldly concepts in an academic way.For the most part this is purposeful,so that his writing resonates with scholarship and authenticity rather than new age type wishy washiness. I found this book extremely useful in understanding the depth and beauty of the japanese soul in its naturual state.I can now undestand greater the other worldliness that is so much a part of modern japanese culture and how a seperation from the spiritual way of lifeway has resulted in its manifestation in such bizzare ways. Izutsu is one of the most profound religous authorities of the last century and i would reccomend any of his books for those seeking to understand the correlation between culture and human nature.Just one of his works wether on zen or islam is worth more than the millions of anthropological writings of western academics.

This book is extremely well written and informative for those interested in classical Japansese aesthetics. It is one of the best reference books available on the subject.
