Spoke to my heart Feb 9, 2010
I met the author before reading the book, so had some idea of the concept of it, but was skeptical of the "fairy tale" approach. Immediately upon reading I was caught up in the visuals and the characters and the depth and richness of the story. I loved the references to the author's "real" life, because it made the "fairy tale" more real and drove home its point so poignantly. I ached with the characters and cheered for the son who struggled. I bought an extra copy for a family I knew dealing with a grown son who has struggles that have affected the entire family. Susie tells the story of a family redeemed without judgment, and with humility and hope for the reader. I pray she continues to write...
Great Read Jun 10, 2009
This was an easy book to read. It was hard to put down once I got started. I'm having my teenagers read it, and we are going to have a discussion about the book, and the impact of drugs on a young person's life. It is a wonderful way to introduce such a serious topic to teens.
Unique Feb 18, 2009
Very unique approach to writing about a struggle that is so familiar to so many families. It was difficult to put the book down. Susie, you really have talent for weaving faith and hope into the dark and lonely world of addiction. Definitely a must-read for all individuals or families who are experiencing the associated "helplessness and hopelessness" and who need a faith-filled and inspirational boost. Thank you for taking the time to share your story. Mary Myers, West Des Moines, Iowa
Tough Love Jan 11, 2009
Susie showed so much strength when everything pointed to an endless tunnel. To endure pain and still maintain some sense of reality is quite remarkable. Not all stories have a happy ending, except in a fantasy world. I think her determination to make the best of a heart-breaking situation is inspirational. Well worth the read. There is a strong message in her writing. Love, hope, faith.
The Gate Called Beautiful Dec 3, 2008
This is a very well written, inspiring story created in fairy tale form which mirrors a family's very real struggle with the heart ache of addiction. The story speaks of the answers found in love, hope and faith. I highly recommend "The Gate Called Beautiful" for anyone, but especially those touched by addiction. The author speaks from first hand experience and touches the heart of the reader in a compelling manner.
