Item description for Knitting into the Mystery: A Guide to the Shawl-Knitting Ministry by Susan S. Jorgensen & Susan S. Izard...
Overview The authors present a description of how to set up and maintain a knitting ministry within church groups.
Knitters there are 38 million of them in the United States alone - are part of a long and quiet tradition that's both plainly practical and deeply spiritual. With needles clicking, they weave together not just garments to warm the body but also comfort and companionship to nurture the soul.
This tradition is flowering today through knitting ministries, a worldwide ecumenical movement of small groups of women who gather to pray and knit for those in need. As they create shawls for people burdened with illness and sorrow, their handiwork becomes an expression, not only of their love and concern, but also of the loving care of the God who works through them.
In this beautifully illustrated book, the authors - a United Church of Christ minister and a Roman Catholic laywoman - share stories of how the knitting ministry has touched lives and hearts around the world. They offer directions for knitting the shawls and for starting a parish or community knitting ministry. The book also provides a selection of prayers, written from many faith traditions, to offer along with each completed shawl.

Prayer Shawl Ministry guiddance Dec 29, 2007
This is an excellent resource. I recently started up a Prayer Shawl Ministry at my church. I've shared this book with the members. It's highly informative and full of more information than I anticipated.
A must have and read Aug 1, 2007
This is a must have and must read for anyone who is interesting in being Blessed to be a Blessing. It is just the best.
prayer is powerful Jul 31, 2007
I find that prayer is powerful no matter what. I have been knitting for years but I have never encountered this ministry before. I read the history behind this ministry and I was, needless to say, impressed and blessed. To think that all the craft items I have given away before this; I could have prayed for these people through these projects. Prayer does work in mysterious ways. A friend of mine borrowed this book before I had a chance to read it and she said that it was a humbling experience. Our church will be starting a similar ministry. A must read for anyone and everyone!
Wonderful Spirit-Filled Book - Recommended for Crocheters Too Jul 19, 2007
Because the title of this book says "Knitting", I had wondered how helpful it would be for a crocheter interested in shawl ministry. Based on other this site reviews, I took a chance and am glad I did so. While the authors are clearly knitters and write from that perspective, I could easily relate to the stories they told and to the ideas they shared on shawl ministry. This is not a pattern book (although it includes a basic knitted shawl pattern and a basic crocheted shawl pattern), but rather it is more of a spiritual book filled with stories, prayers and quotes from various faith traditions, as well as suggestions on how to do shawl ministry. Just reading the book gave me such a spiritual lift and provided me with inspiration for my shawl ministry.
Knitting into the Mystery Jun 11, 2007
It was a book recommended to me by a friend who is already in the Prayer Shawl ministry and gave more reality into the need for personal ministries such as this.
