Item description for The Last of Something: a novel by Susan Kelly...
They've been friends since their college days - Shotsie, Bess, and Claire - and the twenty years since have gotten them husbands, children, mortgages, assorted body patches, one handgun, a hysterectomy, and lots of neurosis. Still, at least once a year they once again have each other. And Ian. This year, they are gathering along with their husbands at Dune Ridge on the coast of North Carolina near the close of summer. The old seaside community has known better days, before the decades of damage by hurricane, before the irreversible beach erosion and wanton shorefront development; and so has Shotsie, who left her Southern girlhood there. Now in her early forties, solid, sensible Shotsie finds that the realities of her marriage - like the infuriating fact that her competitive, can-do husband could be facing jail time for white-collar crime - are continually colliding with a dimly romanticized past. Similarly, bright and capable Claire can only deflect increasingly more disappointment with wit and literary allusion, while her husband confronts midlife with a brand-new Harley-Davidson, cigars, and a ponytail. And Bess, the raffish tomboy no more, contends daily with the adder-tongued, patrician New Englander she shouldn't have married. Only this year their circle is incomplete. Because Ian - wildly irresponsible Ian; "the enigma" Ian - does not show. His young, new wife does, however, and no matter what romance Ian may in the past have shared with Shotsie, Bess, and Claire, it's the dewily beautiful Nina who is bearing his child. For sure, a hurricane is heading menacingly their way, and neither friendship nor memory, any more than a creaky seaside cottage, can grant them safe harbor.
