Item description for Now You Know: A Novel by Susan Kelly...
It starts with a summons, that summer when promises can no longer keep the secrets the two of them shared ... Their friendship is worthy of legend. It is born an early-September day in 1947, in a freshman dorm, when the brassily Yankee and free-spirited Libba Charles first meets her roommate, a near perfect flower of modest young Southern womanhood in the person of Frances Simpson: and for forty-six years it flourishes. It flourishes even as they travel their separate ways: Libba training her steely novelist's eye on the kind of middle-class American domesticity that Frances, with her profoundly understanding husband and their three daughters, comes to epitomize. It flourishes on devotion, on a mutual respect for each other's widely divergent pursuits, on need, on love and laughter and long weekends. Mostly it flourishes on promises. It ends with a promise, too. On her deathbed Frances extracts it from her three daughters - the utterly capable homemaker Alice: the recalcitrant Allegra, a recovering alcoholic: and bohemian Edie, who shrinks in the face of any commitment: their promise to "look after Libba." As if the formidable, tough-minded Libba Charles, author of ten books, a literary celebrity, needed looking after. Four decades of Libba have bred in Frances's daughters some admiration and a ton of resentment. For Libba has always been to them the rival, and winner, in the contest for their mother's affections. Yet when they are summoned by Libba to Creek Cabin, their mother's summer hideaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, they go. None of them is prepared, though, for what they will discover there - about their mother, about Libba, about themselves - in this poignant, adroit rendering of reunions and farewells.

A Treasure of a Read Feb 7, 2008
This story left me both exhilarated and downcast. The first from the incredible storytelling and the characters, the second because I realize how little I know. No one I've read has managed to see feminine relationships with the kind of penetrating sympathy that Susan Kelly does. Nevertheless, they engaged me instantly. I had to know how Frances and Libba could possibly become friends. The dialogue is beyond expert because it is so consistently touching. For the suburban settings I had to use my imagination along with what I've seen since we've lived here in a small southern city. In the Creek Cabin settings, I could see every detail and savor every scent. What was better than all that was the intricate rhythms of the relationships. Not to belabor the point--I loved the book. Of Kelly's three novels,I now place this first in my affections.

What a wonderful book that explores women's friendships and the relationship of a mother and her daughters (from the daughters point of views). It touches on many emotions - love, happiness, sadness and realizing that one is in control of one's own destiny. Could not put it down!
