Item description for Balloons to PawPaw by Susan G. Alexander...
Overview Shocked at the sudden news that her father had only weeks to live, Susan Alexander was trying to process her grief when it hit her: she wasn't just losing a dad, but a grandfather to her kids. How would she tell little Grant and Cara that their beloved Pawpaw was dying? Balloons to Pawpaw is Susan's inspirational account of her father's final weeks and how she used that time to strengthen her faith and her family. As she details each heart-wrenching experience, Susan gently shows how to enhance your last days with a terminally ill loved one. Even more, she provides numerous ideas for helping children comprehend and accept the debilitation and death of someone close to them. Carefully chosen scriptures provide a biblical basis for each story. But the book's highlight-and the source for its title-comes from four-year-old Grant. On the day of her dad's funeral, Susan still wasn't sure if her kids understood that their grandfather had passed away. Then Grant asked if they could launch some "balloons to Pawpaw up in heaven." As they released each balloon and watched it disappear into the sky, Susan pictured her father in heaven catching them and laughing heartily. She finally felt peace at knowing her dad was with the Lord. Whether you are supporting someone who is ill, seeking to explain death to your children, or struggling to bounce back from a loss, Balloons to Pawpaw will be like a soothing salve to your spirit.

A Source of Strength and Hope for All. Mar 25, 2007
This book touched my heart and soul. I cried tears of sadness and tears of joy throughout its entirety. I loved the level of creative symbolism that the author implemented for each of the colored balloons that her son, Grant, chose. Each color was tied in so meaningfully for each of the family's personal experiences with the distress that is accompanied by the loss of a loved one. I also loved the recommendations the author provided to help children cope and grieve in addition to the choices in scripture throughout each chapter. They were thorough, heart warming, reassuring, and comforting. I would highly recommend this book as it is a source of strength and hope when it is needed the most.
You Have to Read This One!! Mar 22, 2007
This book is an excellent resource for those who are, or have been, facing grief. It not only describes the helplessness one feels during the time of loss, but also, and more importantly, presents a constant stream of hopefulness which the grace of God has promised. It is most uplifting! The scriptures are appropriately chosen and placed throughout the book; they serve as a constant reminder of how God has promised to go with us through difficult times. The fact that the book doesn't take long to read is also a big plus, and I promise that you will return again and again to this book for strength and support during difficult times. Great ideas are also given for helping children deal with loss of a loved one.
