Item description for Stephen of Muret: Maxims (Cistercian Studies) by Stephen, Kate Douglas & Deborah Doll...
Overview Stephen of Muret shared these Maxims with his disciples as he trained them as monks of Grandmont between the Order's foundation in 1075 and his death in 1124. 'By his own virtuos example he formed these disciples in the religious life and nourished their thoughts with his own salutary teaching. Whilst he was a true master of doctrine, it was rather as the father of a family that he drew daily from his own treasury of riches those jewels he had himself proved by long and pious perseverance' (from the prologue to the Rule of Grandmont). In this, the first English translation of the Maxims, Deborah van Doel captures something of Stephen's charism that still speaks to the modern reader. Included with this traslation is a series of drawings conveying the uniquely grandmontine material legacy, an architectural style specifically engineered for small communities of hermit monks.
