Item description for The Hegel Reader (Blackwell Readers) by Stephen Houlgate...

This is a collection of all Hegel's writings that are available in English. It contains four important early writings, as well as selections from Hegel's mature writings and lectures. These include, for example, from the Phenomenology, the dialectic of master and slave (important for Marx, Kojeve and Sartre) and the analysis of the unhappy consciousness (important for Feuerbach and Kierkegaard); from the Science of Logic, the account of difference, opposition and contradiction (important for Deleuze, Derrida and Bertrand Russell); from the Philosophy of Subjective Spirit, the account of language and memory (important for Derrida and Paul de Man); and, from the Aesthetics, the account of tragedy (which has been central for later writers on tragedy from Nietzsche to Martha Mussbaum). There is also an extensive bibliography which lists the main German editions of Hegel's works, most of the available English translations of his texts, as well as a selection of important secondary works.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Hegel Reader (Blackwell Readers)?

Great book!  Jun 2, 2008
This is a great book. Required for my class. You can probably find this book a few bucks cheaper. I rather pay the extra dough and save on time and hassle wasted like waiting in line during the beginning days of school or waiting for the auction to end or hoping the seller ships your book to get it before the beginning weeks of class. Just save time and sanity and purchase from this site.
