Reviews - What do customers think about Unbridled Dreams?

--  Apr 18, 2009
Irmagard Friedrich was living the life her mother wanted. She seemed destined to live the life of a proper lady with finishing school in her future. That all changes when Buffalo Bill comes to town and Irma leaves home to fulfill her life long dream of becoming a rider in his show. With a new name and a new life ahead of her, Liberty Belle travels across the country and becomes the center of attention of two possible suitors. It's more than she could have ever dreamed of. Who wouldn't want to star alongside Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley as trick rider in the Wild West show?

I enjoyed seeing a young female be independent and following her lifelong dream in a time where women were supposed to be submissive and genteel. Maybe it's because in the West people had to focus more on survival than putting on airs. Either way it's always nice to see when a woman can stand up for her own self.

Irma is a likable character. The time period is one that is very popular and romanticized. Everyone loves the Old West and would like to relive that popular time period. I enjoyed seeing historical characters throughout the story. I've always loved reading about the Wild West shows. I wish I could have been around back them to see them. How exciting it must have been to watch the acts and see all the famous names in their glory days.

The back story between Irma's parents is interesting as well although at times it detracts from her story. One could have written a book alone regarding her parents, as it is a story in itsself. My only complaint was that it took me a while to get into the book. It starts off a little slow with not a lot of action. Once Irma leaves to join the show, the story then picks up and is very fast paced. Horse fans will also enjoy this story as trick riding gets a good deal of mentioning throughout the book.

Yee-haw for Unbridled Dreams!  Dec 23, 2008
What do you get when you add the spirited daughter of a pushy mother, a dream frowned upon by many, and a dashing cowboy? Yes ma'am, you get the novel "Unbridled Dreams" by Stephanie Grace Whitson, just another Christian novel added to the already very large collection of historical-fiction stories that you can find in any Christian bookstore in the country. But this story may have a bit more to offer readers--for me, it was a good story with a few more references to God and His love than you might find in most other types of these novels.

Irmagard Friedrich, an independent young woman living in the Wild West with her mother and father during the rise of Buffalo Bill, has the unusual dream of becoming a star cowgirl in the rodeo. Already she has mastered the tricks that one would see in the coral on show day, and it is a well-known fact that she has a gift for working with horses. It seems like she might even achieve her dream, too, except for one problem. Her mother. Willa Friedrich just can't understand her daughter's wish to give up tea parties, petticoats, and a fancy woman's school for horse manure and overalls. Not only can she understand it, but she also won't condone it. It's because of this that Irmagard eventually has to go behind her mother's back, with her father's help, to audition for a part in Buffalo Bill Cody's rodeo. To spur her desire of becoming a cowgirl is Shep Sterling, king of the cowboys, and also very smitten with Irmagard (who, by the way, has convinced herself that she has no feelings whatsoever for the cowboy, despite the fact that she can't help but blush every time she's around him).

I found this book to be one of the best Christian historical-fiction novels that I've read. Good lessons were taught about forgiveness, unconditional love, and learning to accept others for who they are. On top of that, there were many references to God, the Bible, and having a true relationship with Him. On the downside, readers learn that a husband was not always faithful to his wife. And although the main heroine may not exactly be a good role model, she learns valuable lessons over the course of the novel that readers themselves can apply to their own lives.

Whitson steps into new direction, excellent western  Sep 28, 2008
Whitson has written a winner, again. Her character, Irma, is a young woman of seventeen who has her sights on being a trick rider in the Wild West show of Buffalo Bill. Her mother, however, is dead set against it, preferring to make Irma a dainty, socially correct young society woman.

The King of the Cowboys is a wonderful character who immediately takes a liking to young Irma, and tries very hard to ignore her because of their age difference and the status of her personality...spoiled rotten by her Dad.

Dad is a mysterious character who Stephanie forms as both hero and bad guy, the reader does not really know this man until well into the book. He will, however, do just about anything his only child, Irma wants or asks, and he seems to have a very secretive side.

Through a very clever "trip" to see the Wild West show, Irma's life takes a complete turn, leaving her mother in temporary horror and shock. However, other things are happening with the parents which threaten the family unit.

Irma agrees to attend a fancy finishing school to please her mother, but can and will she give up the chance to show her stuff with the traveling riders?

This book is gentle, Christ-centered, has many different characters with varied personalities, some the reader will love, others you want to kick in the seat of their pants. I do hope Whitson plans on a sequel to this wonderful book about the wild west and a young woman named Liberty Belle.

You'll definitely want to lasso this book!  Sep 25, 2008
Reviewed by Lori Plach for Reader Views (9/08)

Irma Friedrich could have any thing she could want. She comes from a very affluent family. She does not want a thing at this time. She wants to have an opportunity to try out for the Wild West show. Her mother Willa is very hesitant about allowing her to chase her dream of being a trick rider in the show. Willa thinks the only way she can protect Irma from danger is to keep her out of the show. Why risk injury from falling from a horse?

Irma and Minnie are the best of friends and cousins too. While Irma has her sights set on being a star trick rider, Minnie has romantic pursuits; she wants to gain the attention of young Orrin. Irma seems more interested in horses than men until she meets Shep, a star cowboy in the show. Irma gets the chance to try out for the show and Shep becomes one of her #1 fans. However, there is another cowboy who wants the chance to vie for her attention.

What will Irma do? She is being courted by two handsome cowboys. Could it be that God will show her in what direction her life should be headed? Sometimes our best laid plans are not what God has planned for us, and there are bumps along the road. We find out that God has something much more beautiful and blessed for our lives.

I enjoyed "Unbridled Dreams" from cover to cover. Stephanie Grace Whitson is an incredible author who allows you to feel like you are right there, experiencing the Wild West show along with these extraordinary characters. She uses actual historical facts along with a storyline to keep you glued to reading this book. I hope she writes many more stories like this one. I am not surprised in the least that Ms Whitson is a best-selling author and two-time Christy award finalist.

You'll definitely want to lasso this book, "Unbridled Dreams," from your favorite store today!
