Item description for The Main Line French: 3 Nc3 (Gambit Chess) by Steffen Pedersen...
The French is a sound and resilient defence, which also provides abundant opportunities for counterplay. As a result it has been favoured by such great fighting players as Lasker, Botvinnik and Korchnoi. Current adherents include Short, Shirov, Morozevich and Khalifman. By playing 3 Nc3, White confronts the French head-on. The upshot is often a ferocious battle as Black tries to destroy or damage White's central pawn phalanx. Some of the variations, such as the notorious Winawer Poisoned Pawn, are among the sharpest in opening theory. However, both sides have quieter, more positional, options at their disposal, so there is truly something for everyone in the Main Line French. This book, the first of two volumes by Pedersen on the French, covers all lines after 3 Nc3, including the Winawer (Nimzowitsch), Classical (including the Steinitz), MacCutcheon and Guimard Variations. There is also a full discussion of 3...dxe4, a move that has found favour among those seeking to avoid theory.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Main Line French: 3 Nc3 (Gambit Chess)?
Good French book May 10, 2007
Did not have time to go completely though. Gave to friend...
One of the best books I have ever seen Jan 23, 2003
When I purchased this book I thought that it was going to be a standard book. How wrong was I! This book is fantastic! The author did a great job commenting the positions and it is clear that he, himself, assessed the variations and offered a very balanced opinion.
I was very, very surprised with his thoroughness and the fact that the book is not merely a repository for a database. Pedersen crafted this book with care and professionalism!
I, myself have gathered some ideas from it and what is interesting is that these ideas are applicable over the board...
I am happy I bought this book and hope to see a next one on the French by him.
Excellent Jul 25, 2002
This book talks only of the 3-Nc3 lines and there is much stuff. Steffen Pedersen does a great job in explaining the main variations without forgetting to give less played lines. It is another good example of the quality The Gambit Publications are used to give to readers. The materiel is not too complicated for amateur players and is deep enough. Having contacted the House of Edition myself I can tell that the same author is to write a second book on all the other lines of the French in 2003. I'm eager to see it!
