Item description for The Khmers by Stefano Vecchia...

Steeped in spirituality, rich in an architectural heritage that gave the world such treasures as the temple of Angkor Wat and admired for the creation of a sophisticated irrigation system, the Khmer have long been a source of fascination to us. Through hundreds of superb photographs and insightful text, this impressive volume explores the evolution, development, and decline of this once-mighty civilization. Starting with the emergence of the Khmer or Angkor Civilization that came into existence during the period from 802 to 1431 A.D., Stefano Vecchio traces the history, outlining the milestones and shedding new light on the beliefs, politics, scientific developments, and artistic efforts of the Khmer.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Khmers?

A Nice Coffee-Table Book  Mar 28, 2008
This large-format book showcases color photographs of Khmer temples and statues. It touches on many of the well-known, and some of the lesser-known, Khmer monuments at Angkor and elsewhere, although it seldom goes into much detail. The book is organized chronologically, beginning with Funan and Chenla, and ending with the decline of the Khmer empire after the death of Jayavarman VII in 1215. The accompanying text is written at a "National Geographic" level of understanding: a pleasant, and generally reliable, introduction to the Khmer and their cultural legacy.

While a book like this is no match for the classic works by such authors as Michael Coe ("Angkor And The Khmer Civilization") or Freeman & Jacques ("Ancient Angkor"), it is attractive enough to earn a place on the coffee-tables of people who would enjoy an undemanding look at this truly fascinating ancient civilization.
