Item description for GWF Hegel: Introduction To Science Of Wisdom (Carthage Reprint) by Stanley Rosen...

"This is a brilliant book and an important contribution to Hegelian studies in English. It attempts to provide a comprehensive summary of the Hegelian system as a whole that is technically accurate and faithful to Hegel's intention.... A brilliant explication of the character of Hegelian logic . . . required reading for all Hegel scholars." -- Journal of the American Academy of Religion

"Stanley Rosen's book . . . is scholarly, sympathetic and critical, indeed the final chapter is an incisive critique of Hegel's central epistemological position." -- Times Higher Education Supplement

"Rosen critically evaluates the Hegelian system with reference to The Science of Logic and The Phenomenology of Spirit, and against the background of an analysis of all Hegel's major works. With a scholarly precision and a clarity due to order, paraphrase, and recapitulation, the author presents a new comprehensive interpretation of Hegel's work." -- D. A. Haney, Library Journal

"Those who have admired both the scrupulous scholarship and passionate seriousness of Rosen's earlier books will not be disappointed with the present work." -- James Ogilvy, International Philosophical Quarterly

Reviews - What do customers think about GWF Hegel: Introduction To Science Of Wisdom (Carthage Reprint)?

a long-overdue reissue  Nov 28, 2000
This is one of the best books on Hegel in English. Specifically, it's the best introduction to Hegel for readers who have a good general background in the history of philosophy, but who have yet to tackle Hegel in detail. It's been out of print for a long time, and it's great that it's readily available again.
G.W.F Hegel: An Introduction to the Science of Wisdom  Oct 19, 2000
This is another example of the bright and brilliant intelligence of the author. In this book Rosen brings the whole of the disagreements between the Moderns and the Ancients to bear on the analysis of Hegel. Reading Hegel as a modern, Rosen talks about how Hegel's engagement with the ancients, an engagement which is central to Hegel's thinking, is worked out in the dynamics of Hegel's political thinking. The drama of German thought, its scientism, its radicalisation of philosophical considerations in an effort to arrive at a system of thought, are played against the sober playfulness of ancient thought. The effect is elating, understandable and eminently digestible. Rosen is a god among men.
