Item description for How Strong Women Pray by Bonnie St John...

The author intersperses the inspiring stories of how she overcame personal challenges, including the loss of a limb, the death of a parent, and sexual and substance abuse, with the advice of strong women on how to deal with difficulties through prayer.

Publishers Description
Bonnie St. John profiles some of today's most prominent women and how prayer has impacted their lives.

From Publishers Weekly
Part celebrity memoir, part how-to guide to prayer, this collection features the personal stories of many famous women who openly discuss their spiritual lives. There are some mature and wise words from singer Amy Grant, who confesses that prayer for her is often loose and unscheduled, and from actress/singer Della Reese, who has a regular morning devotional routine. Some of the stories are gripping: syndicated radio host Janet Parshall shares the story of her son's recovery from a gunshot wound to the head; Sopranos star Edie Falco reveals how prayer was the key to overcoming alcoholism; and gymnast Nadia Comaneci discusses how her family remained pious even when prayer and churchgoing were punishable offenses in Romania. The book is roughly organized into themes such as childhood, motherhood, career, marriage, dark times and maintaining a prayer life amid worldly success. Some of the most touching revelations in the book are St. John's own disclosures about fissures in her marriage, recovery from sexual abuse, and problems with perfectionism and self-esteem. At other times, though, St. John's chapters feel like excuses for name-dropping and establishing her career bona fides, which are certainly impressive (Harvard and Oxford degrees; Paralympics silver medal; working on Wall Street and in the White House), but not always obviously relevant. Reviews - What do customers think about How Strong Women Pray?

A wonderful book to be read and shared ...  Feb 14, 2010
Last year, we had a home fire that literally left us with the shirts on our backs, and immediately found the need for and the comfort in our faith, family, and close friends. Once we realized that God's blessings come in many disguises, it was prayer that held us together and brought us through the months of rebuilding our home and our lives. How Strong Women Pray is a wonderful collection of women's journeys and their finding strength in prayer, and in their faith in God and in themselves. This is a book that is inspirational, and should be read and shared with others.
How Strong Women Pray  May 29, 2009
This is an outstanding and very inspirational book. I bought it for myself and was so inspired by the stories of the women that I purchased a copy for my Pastor for her (Yes...I did say her) birthday! It is an excellent addition to any library.
And Still She Rises!  Sep 12, 2008
"How Strong Women Pray," boldly addresses issues that many women face but is often not openly discussed. At age 4, Ms. St. John was molested by her step-father and that cruel act continued for many years. At age 5, she was hospitalized for 6 months, with limited visits from her family, in order to get her leg amputated and then fitted for a prosthetic leg. Ms. St. John writes "to cope with the depressing realities of life, I not only controlled my emotions, I escaped into worlds through books and stories." This coping mechanism was central in her life for many years until she learned through prayer and therapy to face her fears and get in touch with her emotional core. Despite the heartbreaking start, this is not a downer; it is a story about triumphing against the odds and finding the path to self love and self awareness.

Ms. St. John's own story is so powerful that you are tempted to skip all the others and just focus on her compelling story. If you give in to that urge, you will miss inspiring stories by Ann Marie Moloney, a police office who on 9/11 rushed to ground zero to assist. She speaks about witnessing the devastation and coping through prayer and the strength of kids who gave the workers their favorite stuffed animals and blankies. You will love the story of Colette Branch, a Katrina survivor who God placed in the right position to save herself and over 100 severely disabled residents. You will understand the sacrifice of many military families after hearing how Kelly Hoke coped when told that her husband, who just returned from Afghanistan, would be deployed again to Iraq after spending just 90 days at home.

In a book where Ms. St. John laid herself bare, a few of the well known women missed the opportunity to share more of their authentic selves; however, the majority of the stories are heartwarming, painful, inspiring and profoundly authentic. In her early days of giving speeches, Ms. St. John struggled with stage fright. She conquered her fear when she was able to say "God made me to inspire others and He gives me the courage to do it." I believe that readers will indeed be inspired after reading "How Strong Women Pray".
Good Reading  Apr 11, 2008
This was a very good book. Inspiring and practical ways of praying shared by women from different walks of life. Also, the author sharing her story was very inspiring also. I suggest this book to all readers.
Authentic Speaker, Teacher, and Role Model  Apr 1, 2008
I not only had the pleasure of reading the book but also the opportunity of seeing her performs in person on a couple of occasions. It is good to see people that walk what the talk about. Bonnie shares her story. Many times people want to know what experience the person who is teaching has in the subject area. Bonnie demonstrates how important prayer was in her life. She takes it another level by interviewing others who could testify about the important of prayer in their lives. This is a good read. If you have the opportunity to hear her in person take advantage of the time. It will be well worth it.
